Leading the Open Expert race from the start, R on left Brad Lackey and Mark Blackwell to do battIe for second on the muddy course with Mark finall y getting 1IrrJ...... / second and Brad th ird. The final mot o found Ron bac k in the lead with Mark Blackwell runn ing m uch faster on the drier track but his st rong ch arge was cut sh ort after fi ve laps wh en his Maico pooped o ut, leavin g Brad h ome free for sec ond o n his Honda o f Pino le Honda. Floyd Davis, also running fas ter on th e tac ky surface, ca me in third . The 250 Experts fo und Ron once again getting the hol e sh ot, Brad was sec ond an d John Fran klin third. T he final 250 mo to sta r ted o ff wit h Ron and Brad both standing in the p its and J oh n Fra n kl in leadin g into the first turn. Self beat Lackey out o f th e pits to lead th e cha rge afte r the fleeing lead ers. With icy rain and ice wax ed streets due ·to verv low te mpe rature, the weather was unbea rable and not cooperating fo r Sunday's races. Saturday night there was finally a break and the weather start ed warming up . Th e races were o n. Th e 100 class was a great race today . Randy Bind er (Ya m) ca me out on to p again to take fir st ove ra ll. In th e 125 Expert class , it was for sure Dean Rh odes knew what he wanted. He won all three m otos to ta ke first overall. Chet Campbell, fir st time out on a new 175 Penton, won th e 200 class. In 250 J unior action Joe Sandgathe (Suz) took the overall win of the day. Fr ed Whitsell and Boy d Smith (Yam) really believe in close races. Whitsell wo n by two poin ts to take second. Keith Nerseth (Pen) made a clean sweep in the 250 Expert class to clai m first place.
