International trials defended A ft e r readin g your article re garding the Cycl e World International Trials, I feel there ar e some facts th at sho uld be to ld to your read ers. To begin, Southern California prior to January 6th had sustain ed the worst rain for this time of season for 25 years .an d to hold any type of sport under these condit ions i s c o n s i d ered impossible . After three d ay s of endless rain T age Magnusson, FIM Steward, Ivan Wagar, Cyc le World m agazine, Vic Conaway, Clerk o f Course a nd myself sat down to revie w wha t alternatives were available regardin g this event. First, cancel t he event because it could not be postponed, second, hold the event but due to weather not let spectators in, or three, put on even t using the limited paved pa rking we have in back of our park and do the best possible job co nsid eri n g what we h ad. We obviously elected to do the la tt e r. This m ea n t everyone working on this project must work under ex tr em e conditions. Saddleback Park had to prepare to operate in the rain, so mething we have never done in our seven years of operation. Vic Conaway with a severe case of pison oak had to come out in unbelievable rain and walk a nine m ile lo op to flag the differen t sections, not c on sid erin g Deputy Chief Nelson of the Los Angeles Police Department and the Badgers M. C., who also were out m a n y hours prior to the event and of course required to sit in the co ld a nd rain u n til dark scoring each section. Each person who attended this even t was permitted to enter t he pit area and see all t he new japanese trials bikes, re ce ived a fr ee program and m a p with rider n am es, n umbers, and history, an d watch one of t he m o st spectacula r trials I have eve r see n. As for th e time limit and the scoring, at . the beginning of the event and anticipating so me delay the one hour gra ce period was ex tended to two hours to allow ample time . During t he day riders were commenting that they were unhapp y about oth er co m pe ti t o rs who were sandbagging sections to delay thei r ride until a groove had been built up t o make it easier, an d what happened wh en darkness fell and the course got we t catching most of the c o m pe ti t o rs wh o were go ing to "gas it" on the last loop. I spen t most of the day with Mr. Magnusson and Mr. Youngblood, Pres ident of the AMA on the course watching al l of the sections, and in m y opinion the general feeling throughout the event, it was an excellent international event and the people responsible for bringing it to the USA should be co n gra tu la ted b ecause it took a great deal of time and work not co unting t he finan cial end which by the way was a h uge gamble d ue to weather and ti me of year in which they had to put the event on. In co ncl usio n , in order to get promoters to underwrite the $10,000 or $15 ,000 gamble a nd co n tin ue to get the san cti o ns from th e FIM for even ts of this kind I think the reporters should ta ke all the fa cts into con sid era ti o n when covering an event. We wo uld of all liked to o f had blue skies, co ld beer, and Larry Huffman , but we did have each of th ese sc hed uled until the las t m in u te until rain made it impossible.
