Sierra Club Desert Syposium to be held March 9, 1974 at USC, especially if th ose ten or twenty tho usand pe ople were interested in having a p lace to ride motor cy cles in the desert. After all, they invited Bob Ham of M.O.R.E. to give a presentation, and so we 're sure they wouldn 't mind if a few of his frien ds showed up. T his will be y our chance to make sure the Sierra Club understands how y ou feel ab ou t your desert. Brad Lackey has signed with the Husqvama factory to ride the 500 GP circuit for them. WH A T ( O R WHO ) GIVES? Our-in-house political mastermind came ba ck from a govern men t hearing Friday with a terrible headache, wan de re d aro und th e o ffice h itting his firs t in his hand, and kept muttering thi ngs like "S+ t& *SO% Sierra Club ." Th e story goes like this: for the las t six m onths he has been listening to the Sierra Club du des fro m the top to the bottom of the club tell him how the y want to rea ch a compromise with off-road veh icle (O RV) enthusiasts over th e California Desert land use con flic t. It sounde d good enough to him. So he ke pt telling the O RV people to stop calli ng names and sit do wn at the co nference table. And in the last month, he has been con tac ted three times by O RV lead ers who decided to go ah ea d an d tr y that system out. Th at mad e him ha ppy. A t the he aring he went to on lan d use , he even in trod uced so me O RV lead ers to Bill Hol den of the Sierra Club, who stated he wa s very in terested in peace talks. But tw enty minutes later he was talking to Lyle Gaston, also of the Sierra Club , who to ld with sparkling eyes o f the gre at law su it th e Sierra Club will unviel Tu esd ay , J anuary 15 . That suit could, acc ording to Del Vail of th e BLM, throw out th e BLM desert pla n and ca use comple te closu re of the desert until environmental impact sta tem en ts are co mpl eted in fou r to ten years. To top it off, the Sierra Club suit is alm ost id entica l to on e file d by the California Asso ciation of Fou r Wheel Drive Clubs, Inc., recen tl y which cou ld have the same effect. Now, before he kamakazis his n ew desert b ike into Sie rra Club head q uarters, he wa nts to know wh o is on who's side. Or better ye t, wha t gives? And why d id the Sie rra Club buy a fu ll page ad in Dirt Rid er magazin e f or on e th ousand dollar s? Bob Hayes of M.O.R.E. commented about the two lawsuits against the BLM Desert Plan, "Both sides stand to lose and lose badly." The Sierra Club is assuming that the court will rule to close the desert, the ORV folks are assuming that the court will ru le to open the desert. Contadictory rulings by two courts could mean a totally closed desert. Hayes wants a conference with the Sierra Club. / COMPLETE .....ACHINE S H O P AND REPAIR SERVIC~ . ~ " " " " "ShHI Dealer ~ CYcle 1 t AO - A. N . EngIneerIng & Supply KR....E;MER A ....AI-t E'l M . Use "Route Che ck " (see want ad p ages) to get set up with like minds. It's a brand new rea der service, and it 's free. Ge t with it, guys ; we do n ' t want anybody having to stay home o n beautiful weekends for lack of petro l. Use handy Route Check blan k in Want Ad section an d get it together. ABC television's Harry Reasoner pulled one that we should really raise hell about. He did a half-hour show that did nothing more than demean and bad -m outh motorcycles and motorcycling. He said, in effect, that bikes are too unsafe to be allowed on public roads, that bikers are misfits, and that if he were a dictator he'd try to get them ou tlawed. The t ime could have been spent much more constructively if had been used to educate drivers of cars to be mo torcycle-eoncious. It is, after all, t he auto-ist who is responsible for most ear-bike accidents.
