The park opened an ho ur early. so the first ra ce hit t he trac k right on schedule, There were prac tice sessions at 8 a.m, and noon, with three races prior to noon and three even ts after the n o on b reak. As of this writing, the only o ffi cial results availab le are in the Expert and Intermediate classes. Number one Open Expert was Rick Shir ey , mounted o n a Yamaha, FolIowing Sh ire y in the Open Expert class we re T er ry Bilton (Mai) , se cond: a nd Jerry Van Blari com (Mail, third. Mark Hateley, riding a Kawasaki (le t ting th e goo d times roll!), romped to victory in 250 Expert, wh ich pr esented the biggest pa yback o f th e d ay . Fi ni shing in second pl ace be hind Hateley was Chris Bartlett (H us ). with th ird place going to J on Miller (S uz) and fourth to Randy S tubbs, mou nted o n a Bultaco . Rounding o u t t he Expert program for t he day, Fred Joehnck (Bul), romped to 1 25 E xpe rt victory . Finish in g in second pla ce was Vincen t Clark lS uz ), with a third go in g to Tom Grant Pen) . Nex t cam e t he Intermediate re su lts, with Tracey Bra y (CZ), ca p tur ing the Open Intermediate event. As for the 250 Intermediate con tes t , a tie for first pla ce was d ecla red be tween Russ Hoffman (Ha n ). a nd Dave Krikac (Bul). This was due to a sligh t p roblem in th e sc oring departmen t. Krikac, however . is o ne o f th e real up -and-coming young rid ers , sponsored by Bay Area Bultaco, Se cond place in the class went to Martin Taj ara (Yam ), with third pla ce at 250 Intermediate ca p tured by Uni Kana Rick S h irey (Yam ) was t op O pen Ex pert of the NR A·Dunes bash. First of ·all, J uana Madrid , ridi ng a 125 S u zu ki, led all Po wd er Puffs, with the Min ibike wi n goi ng t o T ommy Ho p k in s, w ho somehow faile d t o m en tio n the size o r type of his m achine. NRA Prexy McNeal solved th e prob le m by scoring the 100 Minibikers, wh o slip ped in with the regular Min i classes, separately . Consequently, Hopkins wi ll win his division. but th ere could we ll be other winners before the Minibike race is co m ple tel y scored. Continuing with the unofficials show. Chris Fortier, riding a 125 Hon da , swep t to 125 Beginner vic tory with a win at 100 Beginner going to Jeff Anderson, m ounted on a Yamaha. Chet Hoover, riding a Honda, was the o verall winner in the 250·0pen Beginner race, b ut, a s y et, we are n ot sure who captured the Open Beginner en counter. Again, in th e 100·125 Novice class, Mark Lange, riding a 125 Ho nda, captured th e overall victory, b ut we are not sure of th e I OOcc victory, Finally, Dave Arnold , riding a 250 Honda, finished first ov erall in the 250·0pen Novice ra ce, wit h the vic tory at Open Novi ce going to Gary Davies , riding a 360 Yamaha. He let Ho nda fac tory racer Dave Pessy slide in for no t only the 125 win but also the second fastest man of the 250 Experts! Rick Bea n is a ra cer who usu all y wh ip s into first place position when Carlso n d o esn ' t. " Tonigh t he took his Ho nda Elsinore to an u ndisp u te d first ' m ota win of th e 125 Expert class wi th Pessy second. Bruce McD ougal t o ok third.
