Famous moto-journalist R. (Hog Body ) Creed did wheelies off trees while below.•. By Ric hard H.B, Creed and Pete T.T. Szi lagy i The new 250 trials machine from Yamaha will do for trials riding In 1974 what the old Yamaha DT- 1 Enduro did for off road riding way back In 1968. Trials bikes are a gas. One of the local motocross hotshoes was wheelie-ing eN's test Yamaha TY -250 down the stree t behin d our plush office, while two guys repairing the booglar alarm next door marveled, mouths agape, at the b lock long, crossed-up unicycle rides... "Shoot, Henry, hope a strong RUst of wind doesn't come along for th at fella's sake." Besides be ing a super fine wheelie machine , maybe the best , Yamaha's new trials bike q ualifies as an excellent observed trials mount. Unfortunate ly, the buying public will view t he bike with a ce rtain amount of skepticism, sin ce some of Yamaha's first efforts at singular purpose dirt bikes ha ve been down-right dangero us. To help the m . develop the TY, Yamaha bought Mike Andrews from Ossa . Mick apparently tolerated no shenanigans fro m the resident engineers and the finished product bears more than a little resemblance to the Mick Andrews Replica Ossa. Much to their credit . Yamaha d idn 't try to use a lot of already available par ts in th e TY. With a net weight of only 205 lb s. , it's obvio us that the TY was built fro m the ground up, since even a few of the b ulk y enduro parts would p ush t he weigh t up considerably . This will be a limited production mach ine, though "limited p roduction " has an entirely differe nt me an in g to th e Japanese than it has t o the Spani sh, who manufacture most of the wo rld's trials machinery. If you wa nt a TY·25 0, od ds are that yo ur Yamaha d ealer will have o ne o n h is floor. A be neficial result of the limi ted production sta tu s of th e bike is the excel lent owner's service manual that comes wi th each and every TV . It incl udes specs and proced ures you need to work o n the bike, sh ort of spl itting the cases. Every m ass production Yamaha should be so lu cky . There are a certain few features th at a competitive trials bi ke must have : narrow seat-tank junc ture, out of the ...the infamous P. Szilagyi took the TV for a Sunda y ride.
