Name of Club issue for '73 (so I didn 't get m y chance to wish y o u Merry Christmas) but I can say Happy New Year even if it d oes look a bit dismal. Ascot On Saturday afternoon, the twelfth of this month, Ascot opens aga in wit h IT and half-mile unde r CMC sanction . Tha t will make us " Asco t freaks" happy. We usually have to wait until late Spring before the AMA starts up Friday nig ht fla t tracking. This year we 'll have twice a week to watch . Brass Friday night,January 18 th is Distri ct . 3 7's annual Trophy Presentation. It 's from 8-12 p.m. at Rochelle's, 3 333 Lakewood Blvd., Long Beach. That's righ ta t th e Long Bea ch Airport and really eas y to find. It 's a good chance to re-live so me of th e ex perienc es of las t yea r an d see th e number o ne gu ys get their trophies. News I have a habrt o f saving b its out of newspap ers pertainin g to motorcy cle happenings. On ce in a while I hav e t o clean the whole me ss out or th e house gets over ru n. It gives me a chance to go over th em again . On e from th e Her ald-Examiner made th e fr ont page last October. It was abo u t the sweeping pro gram of the BLM and use of the de sert. One thing th at reall y stuc k out in th is particular ar ticle was State Director J . Russell Penny reall y making a thing abo u t what co n tro ls he fel t m u st be put on desert OR V usc to stop th e rap id inc rease of inju ries. He estimated 14 0 d eaths and 2,000 seri ous inju ries to o k place in '7 2 and injury totals wo uld increase 10 0% in '73. That so unds a b it ste ep to me . I thin k Mr. Penny w as tryin g to find one mor e excuse to keep his paw s on th e desert. You have to live with the beast fo r a while . That's what we 're doing. My husband has bought o ne of t he ne w 500TX eight valve Yamahas. We think Yamaha, (who usually pu ts o ut good machin es) really goofed on thi s one. It leak ed , (O nly British bi kes are supposed to do that!) as di d o thers of the same m od el that we have seen. So meone is doing so me sloppy asse m bly work at the factory. T he real corker was th at there were missing sh im s on the crankshaft. We found out about these when we caj o led a shop manual out of a frien d wh o w orks for Yamaha. Yeah, go ahead and say it, this time we used a little pull but o nly because the de aler couldn't ge t o ne ! The breakdown showed the shi ms but they weren't in the engine wh en it w as pulled down to get worked o n. It was buttoned back u p agai n an d th e fa ctory was notified. Their people came d own to rectify it . T o save the co st o f a major te ardown th ey pu t a few less shi ms behind the timing gears on the cra n k. ' What gets me is h o w a big co m pany can let a b ik e like th at ge t out on the ro ad ca using cust o mers suc h headaches. Ours isn' t th e o n ly 500TX that's had teethi ng problems. In its favor, when I consen t to ride pill ion there is no vibration. Other bikes we've had set teeth to humming or put th e feet t o sleep wi th vib rations. Speed Limit s We're all down to the low ered speed lim it s now. One thing y o u have to admit , it's a lot more co mforta ble riding a bike on the freeway in cold weather now. • Old Timers Hare Scrambles By Dennis J. Willis LA NCASTE R, CAL., DEC. 3 0 The o ldti me rs had a hare scrambles all to themselves at th e Ponderosa tod ay . At ten o 'clock t he banner dr opped and the 39 oldste rs were 0 ff to challenge the sand and wh oop de doos. Tw o age classes, each with two bike size classes ran together. The _ Other organizational aff il iat ion I The holi days are over and, like most of US, I don't know if I'm glad or sorry. I hop e you got some goodies to make life a little hap pier this year; (like new boots and leathers o r maybe a nice new helmet). Due to space limitations my column did not get in the last _ Street Address I By Mau reen Lee cro wd when the officer lost co n tr o l of it while doing a riding exhibition in a parade. He fell o ff but the bike con tin ued because o f the fixed throttle the big beasts have. Here comes the soap box. A fixed throttle may be good for something, but being a ra cer I can't think what. Just out of sheer co m mon sense, I can't see wh y the m o t o rcycle industry hasn't put a voluntary ban on th e things th emselves. Laws hav e been passed righ t and left to change the appearance of our road bikes, but nothing has been done to do away with so mething that is a danger. When a rider drops it, the throttle should snap back. gotten the im p ressio n th at we 're crip pling o urselves with great regu larity and that we h ave to be protected from ourselves. One thing th a t has got me is t ha t th e BLM is responsible fo r management of the land but has neglected to mark th e danger areas. Desert riders who know that land lik e the back of their han ds know where min e shafts a rc to be found , but hikers looking for rocks or flowers d on't. T his was brought up at a District meeting onc e and several desert clubs offered to mar k th e sh afts if the Bureau would just pr ovide the sign s. Nothing happened, b u t wa tc h an d sec . The first time a back packer fall s in to one th ere'll be signs all ove r the p lace ! An other little newspaper story t old of a po lice mo torcycl e going into th e 35 to 44 y ear olds in the op en class seemed a little quicker than th e ove r 45 con tes tan ts, with John Kaplan riding his Husky to the overall win. Tom Windick was cl ose behind fo r the second in the open 35 to 44 class. Tom Brooks Sr. picked up first place honors in t he 175 class. All but two of the over 45 year o lds fa iled to finish . L. Bornhurst was first across the line and had a good lea d ove r second place Frank Keepers. John McC ow an and wonder dog, Cookie, finis hed fourth after having crashed at the start. T he d ay was made extra n ice by th e absence of p it race rs an d mo t o p ar en ts pro te sti ng th at their ch ild ha d been cheated . A fte r the race the finishers were given "lucky numbers" for the hel met drawing. Richard Andrade had th e righ t ticket and walked off with it. Five other finishers were tre ated to a pitcher of beer through th e luck o f the draw. A vote was taken and the riders showed th e event t o be a unanimous su ccess. with co n tes tan ts vowing to do it aga in and bring a friend . _
