nllySCOU: A broad's look Continued from page 43 down a Joshua tre" lined roadway and to see off to th" side of the road an old wrecked automobile, usually lying on its top, and shot full of bullet ho,",s. An I can figure to myS"lf is that the fool who deposi t"d that eyesore must hav" though tit would evaporate once he had left it there. We h"ar a lot of criticism about bikes in th" desert, but I don't know of one motorcycle that can carry a car hulk out among the Joshua tre"s and dump it. Anyway, most of what I find is super. Quiet and peace; long, lonely distanc"s an.d best of all, f"w peop,", and no telephones. All that city stuff is Idt b<:hind wh"n I g"t on my bik" and cruise the back roads of old forgot~n ranches, abandoned gold diggings and towns that w"re short·lived and then died. I also see vast mod"m farms using up·to·date methods of growing Iife.giving crops. Sadly, there's also the fanow acreag" where somebody just didn't make it. If you don't want to expoS" youl'llelf to the elements, breathe the clean country air and ride your two·wheeler wh"r"v"r your whims take you, go play Bridge or something less strenuous than riding a docile trailbike to the ou tback. The old fashioned idea of being "ladylike" is in the past; and good riddance. Sure I'm forty; have grown kids and all that, but I think it's a ball sleeping in our van way out in the d"sert, sometimes even using the front tire of my bike for a backrest while I catch up on my r"ading (the bike makes a dandy cloth"s rack when it's ti"d down in the back of the van while we're using the front end of th" truck for skeping). '"Women's Libbrr?" No way! I've just found somthing that I truly enjoy and a sport that was taboo for gals until a few short y"ars ago. Tim"s have changed; for the b<:tter. Now that I've really Ugotten into it", as my kids say, I can hardly wait for each new bike safari. There are so many places and things to see on a trailbike. I want to look at the old mining towns, the gold and silver coun try and the forest"d mountain roads. I'v" bought piles of maps to plan our trips (half the funs is spreading the charts out on the living room rug and plotting our courS" for th" next weekend jaunt.) My biggest ambition, yet to be realiud, is a pack·in trip to one of the remote campsites in the National Forests. The U.S. Forest Service has designated certain trails for motorcycles only. I hear they're fantastic, and we'll have them as long as w" keep our part of the bargain; leaving no trash and not disturbing nature. What I want to do is trail my bike up into one of those eight to ten thousand.feet.high meadows, sleep out under the stars and r"ally absorb nature as it is in its unspoiled state. My bike can take me there. What I'm trying to say is that th" girls are missing a whole lot of pleasure, excitement and contentment if they /allow the guys to go off and have all the two·wheeler fun. You don't have to tag along with them; there's room for aU us riders. Just take that first solo ride. You'll love it.
