Going Dutch I have, through the years. watched Americans, who are now top professional riders, work from the bOllom when all they received was trophies. Now they are sponsored by factories, dealers, etc. 1 have a few questions to ask of AM~, and you, the fans, spectators, and public. One: Why did AMA allow a Dutch citizen to stay in this country and ride with our American boys for National points, National points money, and our National n umber one pia te? Two: Why does the press refer to him as an American? Haven't they been informed of his-citizen status? Three: Why did AMA not inform all the riders and members that this European would be riding for National points, money, and number one plate? As members of this club we are entitled to know about such important decisions. After all, AMA is our club; without us there would be no AMA. Four: How will this Dutch 'citizen defend lbe number one plate in 1974 now that AMA has ruled that all National riders for National points, money, and number one plate must hold proof of U.S. Citizenship? The time element to become a U.S. citizen is five years of living in this country on a Permanent Residence Visa before application for citizenship can be filed. One cannot live on a temporary work permit, such as all European riders receive to enter this country to race. This permit has an expiration date, so who pulled who's strings to keep one European here in USA since Sept. I972? How can (one) 1 rider be right and 3,999 be so wrong? Both Yamaha and Karsmakers (who wasn't considered a top European at the beginning of the season) were well within their moral and legal rights. There just weren't any rider·bike combinations from this side of the world that had the ability and determination to beat Pierre and his Ya ......has. We don't hear anybody whining about Canadian Yvon DuHamel, Englishman Paul Smart, Finn Jorno Saarinen, or New Zealander Geoff Perry winning a bunch of American National Championship road races and a bunch of American bucks. That's probably because A merican riders in these events are capable of beating the foreign go-faster sometimes, and they've gotten that way partially by having to compete with the non·nationals...
