Regardl~ss of how it cam~ to b~, th~ book should s~rv~ an important function. In fact ~ith~r or both of th~ books m~ntion~d h~re would mak~ good gifts for those turkeys in th~ family who still think of motorcycling as som~ dem~nt~d fonn of anti-social behavior, or for that knoth~ad on th~ city council who consid~rs a motorcycl~ park a bruding ground for anarchy, or for th~ town constabl~ with hatdul urg~ to hassl~ ~y~ry bik~r h~ ~~s. For that r~ason it', ~ncouraging to discoY~r bik~r-writ~rs who bring ~nthusiasm and ability to th~ task of p~senting th~ir vi~w of th~ sport to th~ public. And now th~r~ should b~ many uninitiat~d folks out th~r~ who ar~ consid~ring mor~ ~conomical fonns of transportation or recreation, it's a good tim~ to offer th~m som~ tanlPbl~ infonnation on motorcycling. HardcoY~r books th~ms~lv~s ar~ on~ sign of th~ incr~asing public acc~ptanc~ of motorcycles. PubJish~rs don't oft~n tak~ chanc~s on limit~d-int~r~stbooks if th~r~ app~ars to b~ only a handful of pot~n tial r~ad~rs. Th~ books of Schneid~rs and Gutkind will no doubt signal th~ app~arance of mor~ ~rious works on th~ ~Yolying drama of motorcycl~dom, and it's about tim~. .# TRAMX By Shirley Campbell ~~::;o~~ ~1.~k2has ri~t!!~1l Quality Racing Parts - e MS PRODUCTS Inc. The first two motos were pretty rough for the riders. Then the sun came out for a short p~riod and th~ track dri~d out to some extent. Box Stock Minibik~ Junior class first moto gaY~ Mark Moriarty (Hon) a first with Ol~y Grove (Kaw) a clos~ s~cond. Stan GroY~ (Hon) follow~d big brother for th~ third plac~. Lor~n Erickson (Hon) claimed a first by a good l~ad in moto on~. Gr~g Prod~n (Chap) took s~cond with a clos~ third to Mark Campb~1l (Hon). In th~ s~cond moto th~r~ were som~ disappoint~d rid~rs. Som~ of th~ Minibik~s w~re black flagg~d. Th~y had r~moy~d their muffl~rs which is a no-no. Minibik~ rid~rs must follow th~ sam~ ruI~s as all rid~rs. Shawn St~inback (Hon) was first in th~ s~cond moto with Tony Blanton (Hon) riding a good raa for s~cond_ Mark Campb~1l was third. Third moto action was Proden first, Erickson s~cond and Blan ton third. Th~r~ w~r~ two h~ats of 250 Junior classes. In th~ first h~at K~nn~th Biyen, (Hon) won first oY~rall for th~ day. CMC Carlsbad AMC Saddleback By Thew Asp ORANGE, CAL., DEC. 9 Recently differen t racing clubs have been reported to be ruing missing persons reports with the police to find where all of ~eir riders were going. The police were baffled and were forced to close the case. The clubs were extremely distressed to frod that the num- When you feel his brellth, gas it. By John Bethea CARLSBAD, CAL., DEC. 9 Like a shot out of you-knowwhere, two Experts who failed to win a single event in the justcompleted CMC campaign wound up winning their first in over a year. Former CMC No.1, Billy Urban (Hon) came out on top of th~ 125's, at th~ ~xpen~ of Marty Smith (Hon). Urban tir~d slightly at th~ very ~nd and dropp~d 0 ff th~ pac~, about 50 yards back. Th~ s~cond moto was th~ toughi~. Urban brok~ to th~ I~ad with Smith right on his tail and for seven laps th~y dic~d away for th~ point position, nev~r mo~ than two bik~ I~ngths apart. Th~n Marty's Honda pull~d to a grinding halt with a partially ~ized piston and a bent brak~ proal. Urban hdd th~ undispukd l~ad to th~ ~nd. Rick Sh~ren (Hon) moy~d into ~cond Oyerall. Smith droppro to third oyaall. Th~ oth~r ~turn~~ to th~ CMC winnas circl~ was I 972's runn~rup in th~ CMC points batt1~. Jon D~rhamm~r (Yam). Out for n~arly four months, h~ stiJl manag~d to ~arn th~ No. 66 plat~ for th~ upcoming y~ar. Today h~ simply d~troy~d th~ first moto which saw th~ b~tt~r rac~ for ~cond on back. Morris Malon~, also Yamaha mount~d, w~nt from mid-pack to fini,h s~cond In th~ final was anoth~r whal~ of a show. Derhamm~r got a poor start and was running, in sixth. Up front w~r~ Tommy Croft (Fra) and DaY~ P~ssy (Hon) with Malon~ and McK~~ following. Slowly but r~l~ntl~ssly, D~rhamm~r moy~d up. Wh~n h~ finally got th~ I~ad, th~~ was nobody who could catch him. Malon~ also work~d up and took ~cond by th~ ch~ck~r~d, for s~cond overall. Japan's Koji Masuda (Suz), who is taking a vacation h~r~ in Am~rican for sev~ral w~~ks to attend Roger DeCost~r's w~dding n~xt Saturday, smok~d th~ 500 Exp~rts to becom~ only th~ sixth fo~ign rid~r in CMC history to tak~ an oY~rall. J ohn Bord~n (CZ) won th~ first two 250 rounds and r~laxed just ~nough to ~n~ up fourth in th~ final, still good for th~ ov~rall with John Curtis (Hus) winning th~ third for .~cond on points. Jam~s Russ~1I (CZ) cam~ c1os~r than anyon~ to sw~~ping th~ In t~rm~diat~s. In th~ fmal 500 rac~, h~ cam~ in with a s~cond behind third oY~rall S t~y~ Roach (CZ). Only on~ J unior ch~ck~d in with a cl~an sw~~p \ and that was Pat Brown (CZ) in th~ 25'0 Juniors II. In fact, it . carri~~ on oy~r to ~cond as w~1J as T~rry Bin~r (Mai) mad~ that finish consist~ntly. too. In Diy. I of the 250's, Bob Brown (CZ) scor~d with two firsts and a s~cond. Two divisions of I25's w~~ topped by John Fry (Hon) and Mark Jaffari (Hon). Mark Ars~nault (Hod) topped th~ 100 Juniors with two wins and K~n Martin (CZ) h~ld th~ 500Juniors at bay for that class victory. # ber of missing riders is g~tting bigger and billR~r as th~ weeks go on. Where have all the riders gone~ I think that I might b~ abI~ to soly~ th~ mystery. This week at Saddl~back I witn~s~d on~ of th~ biggest turnouts I'v~ ev~r s~~n for this club or, for that matkr, any other racing organization in a long tim~. A r~cord 350 rid~rs show~d up to pit th~ir bik~s, th~ir strength, and th~ir int~llig~nc~ (if th~ ha~ any) against th~ tr~ach~rous muscl~ draining, Trans-Am cours~. Incid~ntaUy, if,you'r~ hoping to rid~ this fantastically w~Il-laid out co~ you can forg~t it, Baby. AMC was th~ only club p~rmitl~d to spin th~ir knobbi~s on that dirt. Th~ Open Int~nn~diat~-Expert rac~ was a sight to b~hoJd. In th~ 1nkrm~diat~s it was CZ pow~~d Rick B10m who bl~w off his comp~titors with a gr~at d~al of styl~. Th~ only oth~r guy that cam~ clo~ enough to j~opardiz~ Blom's first place win was anoth~r CZ .ac~ by th~ nam~ of G~1t Sokol Th~ Exp~rt part of this rac~ was a fairly pr~dictabl~ on~ b~tw~~n th~ GZ's of David Williams and Jim Hoo~r. D~s his nam~ sound familiar? H~'s th~ guy that probably mad~ th~ pipe that', on your bik~, and what a pip~ build~r h~ is! Anyway, Williams took th~ first plac~ mon~ with Hooya ldt to tak~ ~cond. Bringing up th~ third plac~ spot was Russ Darn~U (Hus). N~xt rac~ up was th~ 250 Exp~rts and l~ading th~ pack all th~ way to th~ ch~ck~r~d flag was Tilson Shumat~ on on~ of th~ n~w Suzuki's that no on~ can fmd anywh~r~.. S~cond plac~ was grabb~d, but with a gr~at d~al of difficulty, by Moto-Cross Ent~rpris~s' Tim Batl~nsch1ag on a Maico. Third place was award~d to th~ "wildman" of th~ 250 class, Bruc~ Baron. Th ~ 250 In t~rm~diat~s was ano th~r crowd app~al~r as Rich~~ Collins (Collins & Son P~nton Shop KTM) compl~t~ly wip~d out his comp~tition with gr~at ~~ and styl~ for th~ littl~ f~llow that h~ is.' S~cond plac~ was claim~d by Tripl~ A Cycl~'s priz~ rid~r, P~t~ Smith (Bul). For a littl~ whil~ it ~~med as if Smith was going to pass Collins and go on to tak~ the first but in th~ final moto, Collins was out in front again with Smith back in th~ pack trying to work his way around th~ squids n~y~r to b~ a thr~at again. Th~ last rac~ that I am going to b~ abl~ to talk abou t will haY~ to be th~ 125 Exp~rt class. First plac~ mon~y grabb~r of th~ day was littl~ DaY~y Carlson from Mission Honda aboard th~ sam~. Nobody could co= clos~ to touching him fo, th~ ~ntir~ day much to his gl~e. S~cond plac~ was taken by anoth~r ~xceJl~nt rid~r, also on a Honda, whos~ n = was Jack Hazard and third, hotly in pursuit of th~ oth~r two, was Paul Minnis (Hon). 0 Little Davey Carlson. Zap.
