cheating during the enduro by having a "spotter" on the course to locate the checks. If the rumor is true, it is a deplorable practice and steps should be taken to prevent it happening again. However, if it is not true a lot of reputations are being slandered and the entire sport is going to suffer. If anyone has any actual proof of the alleged cheating, please contact me or the District 37 enduro steward, Stan Baldwin. Personally I can't see riders like Carl Price, Jay Tullis, Marv Munyon and others having to resort to cheating. So rumor spreaders, either put up (proof) or shut up!! D-37 Changes I talked to Stan Baldwin ahout the new District 37 enduro rules for 1974. Some of the changes are: Only 4 riders on a minute. The term even minute" is being changed to "whole minute" as there were some people interperting the "even" as 2, 4, 6 etc. You won't have to send in a enduro card when you mail in your entry only one will he issued and you must show it at signup. U By Larry Langley After the recent Cal state 100 Enduro, 1 heard some rumors that the Chaparrals M.C. had been Total mileage must be shown on check signs in addition to mileage from last speed change. In casc of a disuputed cleek, the layout bike must be available or the check will be thrown out The poin t system has been changed with two additional columns added and a bigger spread of points allowing more riders to earn points. All riders who earned points for 1973 will be issued their own enduro number plates for 1974. "A" riders will be issued red striped plates and "B" riders will receive green stripes. The number earned will go down in the lower right hand comer. I think this is a great idea as you will be able to look at an enduro plate and be able to tell how the rider places just like the desert racers. Maybe in the future we can have the plates broken down by class. Cold Cacti URA is throwing their second Annual Frosty Cactus Enduro January 13 at California City. An easy first loop for the Powder Puffers and kids and a harder, more challenging second loop for the rest. URA is also going to have a drawing for a free trip for two to Las Vegas, a trip to Disneyland, and other prize•. A Saturday night group campfire with free coffee and hot chocolate to go along with a lot of bench racing is also featured. SlowDown I've heard a lot of complaints lately about some "hot shoes" on the easy first loop of the family enduros. It seems some ill-mannered individual are knocking women and kid. off the trails in their eagerness to pass them. There is going to be concentrated effort to educate (one way or the other) the riders to slow down, pass safely, and use a little courtesy. No trophy is worth an injury to another rider. We have a lot of beginners (our wives and kids) out there try ing their best so have a little patience and the sport will be a 10 t more fun. Gas It Wi th the increasingly tough gas -shortages ahead, the upcoming enduro stason is somt'whal unclear at this point. If you are heading out for the weekend I would strongly recommend flIling up with gas as close to the enduro site as possible on Friday or Saturday at the latest. We went to the CRC Santa Claus Enduro recently and aU the stations in the Lucerne Valley were closed on Friday night and Sunday so don't come out unless you have enough gas to get you home. If you plan on hauling extra gas in cans be forewarned that it is a dangerous practice in case of an acciden t. Those five gallon cans go off Uke bombs. Saddle tanks seem like a better idea. Interesting enough, I talked to a lot of riders and they all had the determination to get out to the desert if it was at all possible. Everyone seemed to have plans to double up or stockpile ration stamps from frit'ods, rdativt's, etc. if it comes to that. Lock Up I found out the hard way at Barstow·to-Vegas that one rim lock on the rcar tire is not enough if you have to ride a long ways. Install two to keep the tire on the rim. You can ride it flat but if it does come off the rims it's allover. Also, two. rim locks will insure you won't spin a tube. It can happen with one. CUSS It Speaking of rim locks, I went down to a Honda dealer to buy a couple of Honda locks since they are special for 0.1.0. rims and was rudely shocked when I found out they li.ted for $5.65 apiece!! What a ripoff!! $5.65 for a blankity-blank-cuss-cuss rim lock?? You can get one for a couple of bucks at any accessory store but it seems the D.I.D. rim is shaped a little different and you are taking a chance running anything but the Honda locks. Double CERA is throwing their annual Easy I enduro down at Desert Center Saturday January 5, 1974. For you enduro freaks, that will allow you to Just a quick fogging up of your goggles can easily land you in a ditch. But that's a worry that need never cross your mind again. Top Gear goggles will not, indeed cannot fog up. They're coated with Hydron, a new plastic film that shakes off steam, condensation, rain or vapor. Last Chance. Last Check The last secret check of the Last Chance Enduro really caught some riders hy surpri.e, most of all Jay Tullis as he had the course zeroed until he was caught two minutes early. Mike Adams reports that henceforth and forever Jay will be known as "Last Check Tullis." So be it. Oh.
