Once back to the Eames residence AI and I sat down to tie up the loose ends before setting out to cure the hunger pains that come from a day in the woods. The running of the ISDT was a team effort brougbt off, to a large degree, by members of the New England Trail Riders Association who gave a lot of unselfish time in order to make the event a success. Ross Fanhauf, Bud Peck and Peter Gylfey, were key names mentioned along with a person who coordinated the entire logistical program for the over 150 workers and handled the daily trail assignments; AI's wife Marie. I don't tbink we have reached the point of being able to beat tbe Europeans with their type of organization; we can come close but our attitude is still not where their's is and it's partly because we're such a volunteer group. It would be interesting to see just what the responsibilities were of the different people involved in the Czech ISDT effort last year and how committed they were versus our people. Being a totally volunteer group I think our attitude is just a little different." "I think that it could be done again but I think we should learn a little more about the ISDT and get other areas of the country involved in the support. The big thing in favor of the New England area was that we are small enough so that we are a family and we have progressed rapidly enough to have a lot of qualified people. As a result the organization was such that you didn't have to worry from day to day about who was going to be there. The responsibility of a New Englander is just a shade better than what I've experienced elsewhere--maybe this is a bad statement to make-but I fed that you have to have tbis sort of responsibility in a person if they are going to do ajob for you." "There's no glamorous job in the Six Days; there just isn't. It's all work-boring work- the workers were warned that by the middle of the week that it would be boring to hang around the checkpoints. The route marshals job wasn't as boring but it was time consuming w'ork and it was tough; they had to ride the trails and they wore their bikes out. They did it with the enthusiasm of being a part of a big experience and that was the reward they got; nothing e,Jse. I would like to see the ISDT come back to the US. We can do as good a job or better tb.e next time; there's no reason why we can't. Would you do it allover again? "Probably. After recuperating. I've had three major events in the last eighteen months-the Berkshire Three Day, the trial ISDT qualifier and the ISDT. It's been fun and it's been real work and right now I'm a Httle tired." ~
