WILSEYVILLE, CAL., NOV. 18
"Malcolm's here!"
The word was out very early in
the w'eekend, but Malcolm Smith
wasn't the only hero to show up
for the 18th Annual running of
the Polka Dots Me Hare
Scrambles. Despite the most adverse weather conditions ever in
the 18 years of the running, over 400
brave and hearty souls did the magic
thing Sunday beginning at 10, a.m.
Dick Mann headed an ull one
other 4 WD. Just getting into and out of
the race site was an experience.
The original course was 18 miles, but
the severity of the rains cut that down.
to 13 and late Saturday afternoon, the
last sweepers checking the course found
some very difficult areas. Rumors of
pos·tponement were started. The
veterans laughed.
The hundreds of souls that came up
the nigh t before for the festivities
weren't disappoin ted, bu t they nearly
drowned and froze. to death by the
inclemency. SJ
