BY,Art Friedman Photos by T opher Reider & Friedman RIVERSIDE, CAL., DEC. 2 Riverside always aUracts,.a large field and even with the thin turn- . out typical of the end of the year, all classes showed respectable numbers of riders for today's ACA road race. The closest race of the days was the 350 Junior GP race which turned into a five-way dice for the win until Richard Williamson and Steve Lang pulled away from Dale McCreary, Gary Saunders, and Galad Maills in the closing third of the race to decide who it would be. Williamson looked like he had it. He'd held a slight lead over the field for several laps and now led Lang. llut with a couple of laps to go he slowed just a little and Williamson caught him and went on to win. All were on Yamahas. The Senior Heavyweigh t event was less spectacular. Jim Evans on one of Mel Dineson's super Yamahas, took the lead immediately and never relinquished it. Turn 7 of the first lap got tricky, George Miller got in hot and there was a series of bobbles. Reg Pridmore wiggled a little bit, and Bob Endicott, who got bumped by Miller, followed Miller off the race track. They both got right back in the race, but Endicott retired a few laps later, Pridmore worked his way up to second on the Butler and Smith BMW as Jim Evans began to open up a lead. Wes Cooley on a Yoshimura Honda 750 sliced through the pack and then set off after Reg, overtaking him in a few laps and then pulling away. They rmished that way, Evans, Cooley, Pridmore. Behind them Miller worked his way back up to fifth behind Rudy Galindo. The Junior lightweight GP event was an overall victory for Jeff Shetler on his 125 Yamaha, JefI' opened up a lead from a good start and was never passed, But he was challenged by Philippe de Lespinary, who charged up to righ t b~ind Shetler before he got in trouble and retired, Shetler's lead was enormous at the flag. The 200 class went to James Young, in second overall on his Suzuki. Scott Foreville (Kaw) took the 100 class from Leif JuIiussen (Kaw). Jim Evans wasn't very successful in the Lightweight Senior event, He got a poor start and then tossed his Hodaka 100 away in turn 7-A when he and Seasons Greetings to OUT customers and friends friends. another rider fell together. The event was won overall by Kevin Stafford on his 125 Yamaha with John Serra (Bul) a rather close second for the win in the 200 class, The 250 classes went to Wes Cooley, who left Walt Foster and the rest of the Seniors far behind, and Richard Williamson who took off with the ,Junior event, leaving Ken Gill with second. Reg Pridmore hasn't gotten one of the new BMW 900 Sports yet, but he didn't need it today. Reg made himself a lead at the start of the Heavyweight Production event on his 750 and just kept going, leaving the 750 Kawasaki of George Roche far behind. In third was Tom Casey on his Action Fours 750. The 350 class ran with the bigger bikes and was led intitially by Steve Lang until his bike quit in the esses while he was running fourth overall. A disappoin ted Lang watched Rod Murufas go by to take the win. Bob Tigert was second 350. The 250 Production race again fell to Ken Gill (Yam) who took it from Gary Pendergrass (Suz). Behind them, Steve McKennan emerged from the 200 class with the first place trophy, and Jim Lester stuffed his Yamaha into the 125 class win. The 100 class win went to Dennis Ruminer on his Honda, The ACA will host its last race of the year this Sunday, December 9, at Carlsbad. • #2 Check the style ad you prefer and clip out the coupon; mail to Cycle News before Dec. 10.
