It's unfortunate, too, because there is only one motorcycle show of any interest that's still open to the public, the Cycle World Show, and that's lost some of it's excitement -and vigor over the past few years. Cycle Expo had two strong points: A whole bunch of antiques, and _ the Benelli Six and MV Agusta display that greeted you when you walked in. Tne antiques, although not very well displayed, were probably the most complete, interesting part of the show. A nutsnell history of motorcycling since 1903 could be found in the antique section of the show. The Benelli Six was there to be seen, but not heard. We had been told before, the show that the Sei would be started every half an hour, but it never got Irred up. The Benelli Six faces an uncertain future. DeTomaso has sworn not to build it in Italy after Honda moved into the country, and anyway, would you tool up to build a bike that complicated in a country with strikes every other week? He hasn't yet found another .location for his plant. There's even a rumor making the rounds that the outer two cylinders are dummies on a four cylinder machine. Benelli, on the other hand, says the first units will be delivered in four months. Good luck. On the stage next to the Benelli was the MV Agusta four cylinder 500cc road racer, alleged to be the one that Phil Read won the 500cc world title with. It was beautiful - and tiny. The choppers were parked out on a rug together and in the rather bleak surroundings failed to make the impression that the pain t and structural extremism should. They need a few The choppen were lost somehow. trappings to come on strong enough to be appreciated. Sitting together out on that rug they looked sort of forlorn. Cafe' racers abounded, but there was very little real innovation or energy among the clip-on set. Except perhaps for Dan Hannebrink's monocoque chassis-ed, snow- mobile engine-powered, torque con ve r ter-transrnissioned, belt-driven Monotrack Engineering Special. The bike is hoped to be ready for showing to Cafe racen abounded, the press fairly soon. It abo;'nds with innovative ideas. The rest of the show, a few competition macnines, small booths from distributors and dealers, and large displays from the manufacturers (no Kawasaki 750 on display) which contained none of the unseen-but-much-rumored bikes of various sizes and configurations from the Qrien t, had very little or nothing to excite anyone who has been to his local dealer recently. However, it was great for those people who still don't know that Elsinores are two-strokes. •
