As usual, the program got underway promptly under the lights on the famed International Course, with almost all of the action furnished by large turnouts in four Novice classes. Novice trophy winners included Gary Cole (Mai) , first Open Novice; Rich Russell (CZ), first 250 Novice, Jon Mandey (CZ), second 250 Novice; Don Faulkner (Hon), fll'st 125 Novice, Jim Roy (Hon), second 125 Novice, Steve Hickok (Yam), third 125 Novice; and Mike Gay (Hod), first 100 Novice. One other class worth mentioning was the Minibike competition, which was extremely hot and heavy. They managed to restore breathing for a brief period, but Larry did not regain consciousness.. In 1971, his first year of desert competition for Bultaco, Larry gained the Number 1 plate in just one year. He won the Check Chase in 1971 and 1972, becoming the only rider to win the prestigious event in two consecutive years. He was widely liked and respected by his fellow riders, and his enthusiasm for !!1otorcycling affected all those with whom he associated. Larry is survived by his wife, Carol, and two young sons. Mark Carver, 15 years old, ran his fIrst race this weekend in the Borrego Rough lOO,placer:! second overall and fIrSt in his class. Young Carver was riding a stock Yamaha 250cc Enduro (DT-l). He finished just a few minutes behind a 400cc Husqvarna for his second place overall. Mark developed engine trouble on the second lap and stopped for a sparkplug change. On one open stretch he spotted a stalled rider and stopped to check his situation and pick up his note. (Safety rules in the Rough 100 require that the first person on the scene of a stopped rider must investigate. All riders are required to carry note paper and pencils to indicated their type of problem situation. The note is dropped at the next check poin t for action by course officials.) Mark h as been riding wi th his parents since he was nine years old, but the Rough 100 was his first competition. When Mark's mother was asked her· feeling of her son's accomplishment, she responded, "We are very excited and proud of his performance. I knew he was a good rider, but this is fantastic.'. . .
