• .! Johnston is hot! III Championships a few weeks ago. Kevin Dick (Yam) managed to put together three outstanding rides; including a win in the second moto, and it added up in his favor in the 100 J un ior over double winner Kirk Waymire (Hod), whose ] 3th in the second round cost him the first place honor. In the 125 Junior Final, Mike Bush (Hon) won fairly strongly but Mike Lyons (Suz) made a neat pass 00 Jeff Jopling (Hon) to take second near the very end. Mike Follmer (Mai) topped the 250 Final list and Carter Reid (Mai) swept the 500 Juniors in that three-round showdown. • ..,,;iI Q t CMC at Carlsbad By John Bethea Joe Johnston at Carlsblld. CMC at Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CAL., NOV. 23 Roll up them white flags and surrender! "J umpin' Joe" Johnston is flying high and tough, winning the 500 Expert overall tonight at Irwindale Raceway for the second week in a row. Joe tipped the scales over Tim Lunde m each of the first two • / 38 motos and in the final. Tim broke the lead and was apparently on his way to the win when he broke a rear shock, givina: re-turn"" Luke Messer the lead with Johnston in second. They were all on Maicos. Tim scored second overall with Gene Martin (Mai) third and Messer fourth. The 250's again went to Dave Pessy on the factory Honda for the third week in a row, the 25th time this season, and the 45th time in two CMC night seasons. Tonight he won the first two motos followed by Tony Rogers (Mai) in the frrst and John Hrynkiewicz (Mai) in the second. While leading the final event, Pessy crashed on lap four just before the last lap flag, fell back to third but still drew the easy win. Bill Rubly (Pen) won the final round but it was Hryenkiewicz in solid second overall. Pessy also won two of the three 125 Expert rounds but a costly start in the second moto erased his overall chances. Off the line he got pushed to the outside and he went through the banners lining the track leading up to the Berts jump. He re-entered the race in last place, worked up 0 sixth, but it wasn't enough to catch Ray Lopez (Pen) on the overall tally 925 to 895. ]n third with a third and two seconds was Nelson Whitehill (Hus). The 125 Intermediates were topped by Cliff Lett (Hon) with victories in the first and third motos and recent bump-up from the Juniors, Bobby Smith (Yam) came home second with the strength of a mid-race win. A poor frrst race kept Ollie Senechal (Hon) back in third. It was a very tight race in the 250 Intermediates, especially in the fight for second. Two-moto winner Jeff Sloan (Yam) took the overall despite finishing nin th in the second round. His 840 score seemed narrow over the tough Don Bongiorno-Mike Huhn show on a - pair of Hondas. Question: does a second and two thirds beat a first, third and fifth? In the Olympic scoring it does (that's how the CMC will score next season) but in the 4oo-300-225-etc. system it comes out 752 to 750 in favor of the reverse. Don won it over Mike. Curly Wholey (CZ) put together three consistent rides, winning one, and aced Rick Welch (Yam) out of the overall trophy in the 500's. Rick entered the final event leading slightly on points, but his third to Curly's win spelled the difference. Mini-Cycler Bobby Gonzales, on a very perky Honda, swept the Minis, his fint overall win since the Irwindale CARLSBAD, CAL., NOV. 25 Pumped up by his recent pair of night time 500 Expert wins, 16-year-old Joe Johnston made his first daylight appearance at a CMC event in several months today at Carlsbad Raceway and wouldn't you know, picked off yet another win, his third in a row.. He led the first moto all the way to the fmal lap when he banged a post and slid back into second place behind factory Husky rider Terry Clark. When Clark's machine blew early in the fmal round, that left a wild duel between Joe and Luke Musser, also on a Maico. They exchanged leads several times before Luke's rear tire went flat and he dropped off the pace very rapidly; but moving up was Mike Yorba (BuI), who crashed twice in the frrst round and ended up eighth in that one. With less than two laps remaining, Mike caugh t and passed Joe to ,,;n the moto, his fust as a pro, but it left him in third behind Clark, who blew in seventh spot. Luke, with a third and a fifth, was fourth. San Diego area riders dominated the 125 and 250 pro classes. In the 125's Marty Smith, on a borrowed Honda, diced it all the way with Torrance's Danny LaPorte (Pen) and won the final to top it all. Billy Urban, who had led the second moto before spilling, took third overall. The 250's went to Rich Pinnick (CZ) as he and fellow San Diegan Marty Moates (Hon) had a rough two-moto go trading first and second. Jon Derhammer (Yam) took third for Orange County and Mission Viejo. Albert Ortiz (Mai) swept the 500 Intermediates and in the process may have earned enough points to transfer to the Expert~ for next season. Steve Roach (CZ) was second. In the other pair of Intermediate classes, Don Bongiorno (Hon) scored the 250 win with a ]-1·2 total over John Curtis' 2-3-1 on his Husky. And Albert Cancino led the Honda-infested 125's wh en Richard Ramierez lost the advantage to two moto wins when he took tenth in round two, dropping him to second. Only one Junior was involved in a sweeper, Fred Webb on a Honda in 125's Division Il. It was very easy. Steve Genet (Hon) won Division I rather easily with two firsts and a fifth. The two divisions of 250's were topped by Terry Biner (Mai) and Mark Armstrong (Yam); each won only one moto enroute. Bob Evans (Hod) put together two firsts and a futh, but the fifth cost him the overall as Don Laverty (Hod) took it with two seconds and a fmal moto win in the 100 Juniors. The 500 Juniors went to Ernie Roberts (Yam) as he won two motos. The other rider to win a round, Lynn Vick (CZ), took second. A reminder, CMC will no t run this ~ext Sunday due to the Cycle World GP, but will return to Carlsbad two wee ks from today for the 1973 Carlsbad Championships with big four foot trophies to Juniors and Intermediates. Also, silencers are getting a bit loud and it is beginning to create some stir among nearby residen ts at all the tracks. • Randy Berkeley Motocroa JacIcaa Rock Benefit Explonr Post 305 Uke M8den, Calif.
