John Sands went from Novice to
Amateur to overall, all in one easy
lesson, sounds simple enough but
somehow things always do when
you just say them. Actually John
worked his way up to his present
competitive state by riding all the
way through the Novice program

pressure to the Expert boys ~veral
times lately and like a bottle of good
wine, once you've smelled the cork
you're ready for the whole bottle.
At the bomb and out front of the
fast moving group it was John Fisher on
a 250 Yamaha with riders closing in on
both sides as they headed towards the
small saddle. Ron Dugan on a 400
Husky, Gus Paull also on a 400 Husky,
John Sands riding a 500 Yamaha and
Jack Orndoff aboard a 400 Husky were
all righ t on his tail as they shuffled for
positions while picking up the course.
Gus Paull had taken the lead by the
time they hit the "old fashioned sand
wash," old fashioned in the ~n~ that it
was one of tho~ big washes that run
forever but appeared to be lacking the
normal "whoop-
