• • GIl Mission Gorge Trials IIIlI By Christopher Ostlind IIIlI ..,;II SAN DIEGO, CAL., NOV. 18 t Team Montesa rider Marland Whaley fmished up the American Trials Association poin ts paying schedule just like he started it: winning. Marland put together four super-low loop scores to outdistance second place Master ~ ~ ... rider Mark Eggar by a score of 40 to 44_ Third place was lUchard Delaney with a total of 52. He was followed by ~orge Smith who posted a 55 and Martin Belair with a 59. Marland and Bernie Schreiber, who have had the ATA number one and number two plates respectively sewn up for some time now, didn't even have to ride today to maintain their finishing positions on the season_ For Marland it was a fun day for practice and the final tuning up for this corning weekend's final round in the S tate Championship up in Hollister. Whaley is the current State Champ and after two rounds this year is in the driver's seat for the top spot again as he has won both of them. Marland can't really afford to goof off next week as Bernie Schreiber and Martin Belair are both in contention and could pull off some surprises if Marland doesn't get down to business. Also present for the State Championship will be Northern Californians Lane Leavitt, who needs no introduction; Bob Tyson, one of the top finishers in this event every year; and Steve Darrow, who this year came down and won one of the most prestigious even IS in Southern California, the annual SDTR Scottish Trial. Today, though, it was one of the most interesting trials of the year as thc rain . fell constantly during the competition (something we SoCaI people are not used to), causing the IlJ ..0 E IlJ U IlJ o Whittaker's new WKR-Series tanks will stand up to the roughest punishment you dish out, round after round, and still come out a winner. There were quite a few upset trialers who had to push their machines back to the pi ts because of the wetness. Because the AfA send their best riders to Spain every year with the proceeds of EI Trial de Espana, the figh ting for the top spots has gotten hot and heavy over the past few months. One of those riders who has really gotten the bug has bcen George Smith. George's hard riding during the last couple of mon ths has really put a lot of pressure on the fron t runners, and it looks as if it has paid off. Jt appears as if George has finished up in third position behind Whaley and Schreiber while Martin Belair is fourth. Mark Eggar is fifth and Richard Delaney ended up sixth. All of these placing. are tentative until the ATA comes out with the official notices so don't rush off and tell your relatives.
