, • XL·350 and the other on the MT-250? Well it's good to see a factory providing some sponsorship in the enduro field, it goes to show you that the manufacturers are waking up to the fact a good many bikes they sell are used in enduros and can be used as a selling point. Will Suzuki, Ya.rnaha and Kawasaki follow suit and also join in sponsoring? Start bugging your dealer and maybe the feedback will trigger a good reaction. II III • I II loll t • • Good Show. Kemosabe Everyone who rode the recent Tonto 100 enduro in Arizona came back raving about it. It was a tough enduro but run extremely well. The Chaparrals MC. made the long trip said it was well worth it. The promoting club has got their act together. District 37 is contemplating some new enduro rules for '74. print them as soon as they are finalized. Use This Special Cycle News West Holiday Issue "Greeting Ad" offer. "II Yule Run By Larry Langley The purpose of this column will be to focus on the entire Western enduro scene, ·to provide enduro oriented product evaluations, provide some up to date information on enduros and just about anything about enduros that comes a1eng. Please send any information, suggestions. e te., to me care of Cycle News. Color Coded Ribbons The Pomona Valley Desert Riders have made a suggestion to BLM concerning the color of ribbon used by the promoting clubs in the desert. At their recent Turkey Shoot Enduro they were using blue ribbon to mark their course bu t the Double Crossers MC. also had blue ribbon ou t in the same area for the Cal State 100 Enduro which was to run the following weekend. If you got off the Turkey Shoot course you picked up the Cal State course and probably never even knew you were lost until you ran out of gas. PVDR believes that BLM should assign ribbon colors to the clubs running in the same area. Sounds like a good idea to me. Would also let us know who's not cleaning up their course. Iron Horses CRC, a promoter, is throwing a District 37 enduro January 6, 1974. The event, called the Iron Horse Enduro, will be about 100 miles and not super tough. I wonder if the Iron Horse Enduro Team will get free entries. Last Chance You could have knocked me over with a feather when I opened the mail the other day and my Last Chance J Enduro finishing pin finally got here. , Not bad since the enduro was last December. CEA had a really good idea originally for their pins in that they were going to put each rider's picture on his own finishing pin. Good idea but it didn't work out. Speaking of the Last Chance Enduro, the calendar shows it to be two IOO-mile loops which is a misprin t. It will be two 50-mile loo;>s and CEA will .be looking for unauthorized people on their course. I truly pity anyone they catch screwing up the course. Tension I wan ted to do a product evalua tion on the Chain·Tite Chain Tensioner and obtained one for a look at it and discovered that it can only be used with the stock rear sprocket, which pretty well eliminates its use on most enduro bikes since almost everyone changes the sprocket. I feel Chain-Tite should include this facl in their adver tising and save a lot of headaches. Sponsorship Jay Tullis, Tony Furtado and Marv Munyon are the three local riders now sponsored by Honda. They are riding the new MT-250 two strokes. The team won the team trophy at the 500-mile Greehom National Enduro with Marv taking first overall, all on the XL-250 four-stro:ke. I can understand why Honda wants to promote their newest enduro bike but I wonder why they didn't spread them around on Honda's different bikes, say one on a XL-250 (tried and proved), one on the new • CRC is throwing a family enduro on December 9 called the San ta Claus Enduro and are giving away 100% trophies. There is a lot of pro and con about this. The pro is that it's nice to get a trophy and the con is that a trophy should be earned by doing somewhat better than just finishing. Whatever.. .!t should be a good enduro. CRC has thrown some good enduros lately. _ Take a minute to send HolUlny Greetings to 48,000 friends, for only $50.00. AMERawhide Enclose 50.00 check and mail to: Cycle News West By Jack Collin Box 498 Long Beach, CA 90 OJ ELSINORE, CAL., NOV. 18 The ridges and ruts of Rawhide Cycle Park were softened by rain Sunday but by no means removed, as AME's hardiest twisted and churned the muddy mess to a near swamp land before the sun fmally came through about noon and helped the wind blow some of the water off. Machine displacements were split down the middle for racing. All classes 125 in the first event, and 250 and Open in the second race. Le Mans starts were used in the first two motos and you'd think Pete Maly had a 9-f1at 100 yard dash in him as he was able to put his CZ round the flfst rum before a lot of the competition got . their machines started in the first moto. Maly won the event going away. Maly got the jump again in the second Le Mans start but Tracy.Oswell must have learned some thing from the first evenL Oswell's Tom Sawyer Honda just missed the lead at the first rum, and he kept pushing at Maly until, at the top of the back hill, Oswell lost traction and nearly came down the side backward 'in what would have been "a very unusual attitude". He recovered, however, and went on to follow Maly in for his number two finish. In the third big bore event Oswell came to battle determined to show Maly how it's done, but a real showdown was not to be because Maly had to come to the start on his number two bike. He had stripped the plug threads on his best machine and overall honors were in jeopardy. There was no Le Mans in the third even t. Oswell le.aped out at the start followed closely by Ken Ratzloff's big Maico, then Jeff Browning (Mon), then Maly. It stayed that way until Browning slowed for some mechanical problem. Maly moved to second in class which gave him overall honors. Oswell and Browning finished two and three in the 250 Senior class. Toby Taki (Hon) showed all classes of 125 's how to do it in the mud. Taki was out front for everything except three laps of the first moto where Beginner Frank Pilato (Pen) led them all. Toby captured Senior 125 honors while Ken Ehlers (Hus) took second. Fran k Pilato won Beginners honors followed by Ken Collins (Kaw). Bill Cook (Suz) nced with no other Intermediate competition, but just finishing today rates a whoop-de-do. Just like Steve Hester (Hus) and Mark Older (Hon) finishing 1-2 in the 125 Juniors. _ Ad wpy deadline l\!onday, December 10, 1973 Volume Ten, Number 50 (December 19, 1973, Lhroul?;h January 8,1974.)
