L.A., Houston) Lightweight, Powerful, with Superb Handling HANDLING FEAlURES: Absolute superiority in control and handling. The Coopers go straight in the rough and steady in the corners. The stable, soft ride is due to the excellent frame and fork geometry and the balanced hydraulic dampening between the front forks and , the rear shocks. PERFORMANCE: Fantastic acceleration with super wide torque, all the way to 8000 RPM. The strong flexible power, along with heavy flywheels, assures traction through mud and climbing steep hills, and this also keeps steady pulling through the corners and jump ahead action while shifting gears. This is true for Moto Cross and Enduros. •• ~~ 6422 San Fernando Road Glendale, Ca. 91201 • 213/246-8241 Made in Mexico by MOTO ISLO 8SCUOERIA There's a $50 bonus when you join Confidence! One year ago today the event was held for Beginners and Novices only. This year's program, now opcn to all classes, attracted a very competitive field of riders. Art Knapp, Bryan Breker, Bill Saltzman, Jack Knebel, Gus Paull, John Sands and Jim Francis were the boys you had to beat today if you were hoping to take home the $50 first place money. At 10 a.m. numbers were recorded for the first start and the Experts, Amateurs and Novices werc~ on their way, heading East across upper Johnson Valley to a smoke bomb some four miles out. At the bomb it was Jack Knebel in \ the lead with brother Alan right on his tajl. Following the Knebel brothers were Bryan Breker, Gus Paull, Kurt Lohmeyer and Kevin Hasten. Jack Knebel held the lead through the first check and enjoyed the dust-free view of the course halfway around loop 1. But as they say, "nothing lasts forever," and young Breker had moved up right behind Jack and must have had a glimpse of the open desert out in front. Knebel had a minor get-off, if there is such a thing when you are leading and killed his engine, got back up, started his bike and was off and running only dropping one place, to Breker. With the fIrst wave of riders off and approximately halfway around the first loop the Beginners were ready to get into the act and at 10:20 the banner dropped for them. At the bomb, Dale Trisler (360 Yam) had the lead with' Frank Arciero, Jr. (360 Yam) running second. Ray Lewis (360 Yam), Roy Steed (125 Hon), and Rex Sasse (250 Yam) made up the rest of the fast moving group at the bomb. Coming into the pits for the finish of loop 1 with a two minute lead was Bryan Breker, taking his gas and leading out on to loop 2, still holding down the lead. Jack Knebel came through second and Gus Paull was holding down third. Following Paull were Alan Knebel and Kurt Lohmeyer. The amazing thing was that Breker had a two minute lead and in the first five positions a total of only three min u t.es had passed. The second through fifth place riders were close. On the second loop, which offers a real varie ty of riding in comparison to the first which was wide-opcn, sandy, and fast, one group went strajght west around some mountains and right back to the pits. One poor lost soul left the pits and took an old course from last week's race and about 50 riders or so followed him. Luckily they ran in to the incoming trajl and arrived at the fmish a little too early for the leaders. They were greeted by DRA officials Ron Burpo and Art Knapp, told of their misfortune, and instructed to the second loop again. Coming across the finish line after one hour and 40 minutes, it was Bryan Breker on a 350 Bultaco. Finishing two minutes behind for second overall was Jack Knebel on a 360 Bultaco. Gus Paull, riding a 400 Husky, pulled in third overall and third Opcn Expert with Kevin Hasten right on his tW for fourth overall and fIrst 250 Expcrt on a Bul. Alan Knebel was fifth and first Open Amateur on a 360 Yamaha, with Kurt Lohmeyer fmishing next, sixth overall and second 250 Expert. • ..• • Be a winner! Collins & Son 1265 E.
