.• '; MOle North ~ t San Jose Indoor, A Real Riot SAN JOSE, CAL., NOV. 9 Winter rains drove the second night's entry of indoor riders directly indoors. With an ever-increasing field of entries, the race got hotter - and so did the action surrounding the little arena. During one of the 250 Expert heats, a rider fell and was slightly injured. In the process of clearing the track and attending to the young man, a commotion occured at the entry to the arena and before anyone could intervene, it was truly a riot. Just like the old days. Time and cooler heads prevailed and after a few more action packed minutes, things quieted down and the racing continued. Dennis Robinson took over things on the 1/IOth mile asphalt by winning the 360 Expert main, the overall poin t lead, and the lead in his class. After the six~race series leaves here, it goes to Santa Rosa for eight weeks and then to a one-nighter in the Cow - Palace, Saturday, March 2. All the high point even ts will combine at the Cow Palace for an overall indoor champ. Robinson looks pretty good for starters. Dan Contreras surprised himself with an easy win in the 250 Novice main, riding his Sonny Kenyon Bultaco while last week's winner Bob Silva held up second over Frankie Borba. Silva remains tied for second in overall points and leads his class. One young man may weD be in line for two higb point awards. Rich Luhdorff, riding a 100 Bul and 200 Triumph Cub, is pretty tough to beaL He won both Novice classes in those size ranks and is a determined competitior with a determined father helping him out. (At right: Eric Weiss/er, 125 Novice winner indoors.) Oakdale Winter Scrambles OAKDALE, CAL., NOV J I Despite the close of the Black Plate season two weeks prior, just about all the hot-to-trot troops were in attendance at today's Pioneer Arena winter scrambles. While some just came to watch, the business of racing was just as action packed as it was for the last point run. Neil MacDannald reiterated the fact that he is the man to beat in the rough and did it this time on a new mount. Selling his mostly winning Elsinore 250 Honda to Bill Rose, N.eil is out to compaign on a new Montesa VR, winning both handily over Ken Caves and Roy Winters. The only bad thing as it turned out was that a hit of rain made for some slick spots. A number of riders did the old over-the-backside trick while some: were forced to cut the course and were disqualified for those efforts. Luckily, no one was hurt despite some real hard falls. Chuck Goodrich returned to the racing scene after some years ab~nce. Chuck was a very promising rider three years hack and his win in the 125 Junior today just went to show that he still has the stuff that makes champions. Stan Slate proved the worth of his 175 Penton in today's Novice main with an easy win. He rides with a smooth style that does not get him into trouble, at least on the track. His only problem after the win comes from having to tell the Tulloch Lake mob how it really is out there. Michelle Hoover may not know that she is a young lady yet, as this young cuttie is just about the fastest thing on a Briggs & Stratton I've ever seen. She knows no fear as was proven when she got into a ginat tank slapper in the heat, got off real hard, remounted to finish in the money and then went on to win the main with ease. And her routine over the jump is nothing less that spectacular. • L- ~ ~ q,oq 1973
