The actual size of the indoor arena is about 1/12 of a mile, short and pointed at each end. The racing is fantastic and when a rider becomes accomplished on this type of surface, he generally is good on any indoor surface, as witnessed by the AI Kenyon, Steve Hernandez, Rick Hocking, Dave Hansen, and other such indoor graduates. Steve Hernandez returned for a bout with this track tonight and despite some differences of opinions, he was the winner in the 360 Expert run. In the heat, Steve drew next to Scott Pearson and had quite a race. Pearson got the jump and led the former Yamaha Silver Cup winner right to the checkered where the controversy arose. Exiting the final turn, Pearson got a little wide, and when he went to turn up the wick he got just a little sideways, picking up the front end. Hernandez was close enough to try to get underneath. The decision of the referee went to Pearson, but the scorers said Hernandez won and the talk got louder. Lining up the main got to be the problem with unhappy outside elements but the outcome was to Hernandez and he proved that he still has the stuff. Old timers made the scene and Larry Trantham was one of the winners, riding his 350 Honda twin to the win in the J uninr class over Gary Orlando and Mike Urban: coming down. Gary Cooper. Trantham and Hernandez att friends of old, so the celebration was even better. Young Randy Mamola has made the big bike scene with a 100 Novice win tonight after some time winning the mini-bike races. Riding a Hodaka for Cancilla Distributors, this young 14-year-oJd may well dominate the series with size and speed a determining factor. The large en try of 235 riders made the 250 Novice class the biggest. When Bob Silva came ou t the winner, he was smothered with affection from slaps om the back to kisses. The chain on his Bultaco parted company on the burnout and some five friends got it back together just in time to make the start line. Steve Turner and Dan Contreras hung on the longest to finish second and third. The crashing and bashing was at its usual feverish pitch. Rich Luhdorff brought out an old Triumph Cub and showed why they were the hot set up some 10 years ago by beating old timer We. Stout in a real crash and bash affair that was restarted twice. The young Luhdorff is a real light kid who knows where the twist grip is set and handles it well. B.A.R.F. Biggie DIXON, CAL., OCT. 21 The Bay Area Racing Federation just completed its big two-day motocross with what had to be a real crowd-pleaser. Some of the area's top Experts went home with their pockets loaded down with loot, and one very happy young man is the proud possessor of a new Monark MXer. Danny Turner fought for his leads in the 125 and 250 Expert classes, but the $331 he took home with him was well wonh it. Jeff Loff was the big winner in the Open Expert class, and ended up $160 richer for his efforts. The new Monark (donated by Grand Prix Motorcycles) was won by Arnold Plant, but only thought a last minute surprise" to everyone. Until lialfway through the: last round of motos, it looked as though the Monark would be awarded to either Dan Brown or Harry 8elleci tt;, as both of these riders had scored First Place in all four of their motos. On top of that, both of these riders had led for a total of fourteen laps. The big question at that point was how to break the tie. Then, a rider in another Division suffered a twinge of consciene and admitted to the Referee that he was really an Amateur riding in the Novice class. He had scored three
