It costs the Association about $6,000 a month to make up the losses of AMA News. Members migh t ask why, in a field practically glu tted with magazines, do we continue to operate this loser? There is no satisfactory answer. The new monthly newsletter, mailed free to all AMA members is a better means of communication and a'whole lot cheaper than the high priced spread. The glossy, 4<010r, misnamed magazine is hard to give away at $3 a year. Its main attraction is the calendar of AMA events, which is often redu.ced to unreadibility and out of date by the time the readers get it. AMA calendar informa tion belongs in the newsletter, not in a magazine. As one $12 member with some understanding of the publications game, .my opinion is that the AMA should get out of the monthly magazine business now. Motorcycling needs AMA News like Ford needed the Edsel. Ah: But an Annual... There is excellent graphic talent on the AMA staff; the layouts of AMA News proved that. This talent should not go to waste, neither should Ed Youngblood tum the newsletter into another wasted slick. The AMA magazine staff should tum their talents towards making something we need and want - an AMA Annual. This book would be a prized history of the records, activity and accomplishmen ts of the season just passed - the Championships in AMA sport, ,the club achievements, the battles won and lost by the Legislative Department, even the joys of two wheels on the open road. The AMA Annual would not be published at a loss, because motorcycling needs it. This annual yearbook could pre..,n t the ponderous progress of our sport completely, the whole picture from beginning to end, with the benefit of hindsight to enhance our viewpoint of it all. This annual book of the sport could be offered to the members at a very low price because what industry member could resist buying a page of ad.crtising in the one book that has it aU between two covers? Excess revenue could be applied to other worthwhile AMA projects. The AMA Annual could be a best seller. If you are an AMA member, and if you agree that our dues could be better spen t than subsidizing the deficit of Hour·' magazine, and that an AMA Annual like I have described would be more desirable, then please write a letter.
