Kids on "motocross" bicycl~s were underfoot, overhead and shooting around in all directions. The DDMC had a bicycle race before the regular events got underway and the pre-motorized racers couldn't be turned off just because their racing was over. The only sour note we detected during Sunday's happening were spectators who thoughtlessly sought better viewing positions by wandering across the track during the racing. Bad show. Course marshals were overworked and hot and dusty but generally did a good job with the crowds who came to see that special blend of enthusiasm and excitemen t that only good sportsman motorcycle racing seems capable of generating. Maintenance of the heavily used circuit during the day was generally good, though each class will have the right to complain, purchased with their entry fee, that it was too muddy/dusty/rocky/slick because the course was watered/not watered/etc. just before their even L I liked the course and so did most everybody else who rode it; short by GP standards, tough, fast, and fun. I t's the sort of thing most guys would like to ride every weekend. Yes, the oglers were lined three-deep at the notorious mudhole and yes, a few unfortunates per class actually did manage to lose it in the brown glop, but the slime p'it was not as bottomless as some would have you believe. There were at least two good lines through it. There were lots of 500 Novices. It took two heats to get 72 of them into the five lap main. When it was all over, really all .over, the last race of the weekend, Russ Mortenson had overcome. That's a hard way to get a trophy on $ 1500 worth of racing machine. (The same thing had gone on with the 250 green platers the day before. It's not really a bad solu tion to crowded Novice classes.) Winners? There was an official one for .each class but a lot were winners who nobody except themselves knew anything about. Personal victories were frequent and fine. Guys you've heard about before kept on going fast at Hopetown. Bob Kline is 12 yean old; won 100 Novice dBSl on a minibike. Make you ,"I old?
