, CMC Irwindale By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CAL., NOV 9 Dave Pessy may be a factory Honda rider on the West Coast waiting for. the qualifying rounds to start in January, but he is already beginning to raise a welt on the backs of his professional foes in CMC competition. Tonight the curly-haired Torrance resident debuted a bored-out 300cc-plus Honda and competed in all three Expert classes at Irwindale Raceway. He won the 125 and 250 classes, going away in all six motos, but that 500 class was something else! That was the only class Rex Staten entered and he, too, didn't win...but probably should have as he won the first round, expectedly, over Tim Lunde (Mai) and Pessy. In the second moto, off he went again into the lead and appeared to be on his way. Suddenly, the transmission went kablooey and he pulled off and out of action for the night. That put Tim Lunde up front with Pessy sneaking up on him. The checkered came before he caught up. The final was to be the showdown. Lunde picked off the win and Pessy secured himself second. No change throughout as Lunde won it with Pessy wrapping up the night in second. Earlier, Lunde was Pessy's chief victim in the 250s. In the 125s, it was Nelson Whitehill (Hus), who failed narrowly again in his bid for his frrst pro CMC win. It was the third week in a row at Irwindale that Nelson has taken a second:'" so close. The largest In termediate turnou t came in the 250s and in that Morgan Malocco (Yam) had it pretty easy as he pulled off two victories anq then settled back with a second in the final to collect the first-place piece of brass from Don Bongiorno (Hon), who won that final encounter. • Orange Bowl of MX By Tom Corley EL TORO, CAL., NOV. 9 Jeff Szueber (Yam) in the 500 Expert class led off the night with the first moto win on his way to his second overall win in 500 Expert racing during the Orange Bowl of Motocross at Orange County International Raceway. , Last week while just about to line up to the starting gate for another roaring moto Jeff comment.ed "I can't believe I'm winning!" Now he's becoming another super winner at Orange County International Raceway like Dave Carlson and Morris Malone. He was out.of·sight of combined 250 _ and 5,00 Expert starsJohn Hrynkiewicz, Bob Rowe, Jim Dorminn and John Petty. A weird start gave Szueber the bad break of being fourth overall in the second moto. Szueber still tripped over to the payback trailer for the 500 Expert winnings of the night over Bob Rowe's Yamaha. John Hrynkiewicz's Maico whipped the 250 Expert class go-fast 'crosseTS Jim Dormann andJohn Petty, both racing the massive-finned Penton 250 MX. As of tonight a promoter said that / the Orange Bowl of Motocross was a bit new and improved. I'm sure that every racer noticed the now powerful lighting at the fish hook sweeper along with another loud speaker for the grandstands. • Superfun Motocross By Tom Corley IRVINE, CAL., NOV. 10 Frank -Steiner 'used a Pro-Fab Frames special motocrosser to blow off the 250 and 500 Expert combined in Saddleback Park Superfun Motocrossing today. He made the rest of the swarm of racers look like they were doggin' it. Tom Darrah on the fastest Husky in the park was first 500 Expert and second overall in the motos. Jerry Trojnar (CZ) was unlucky today with problems in the second moto. The head pipe was all that was left of his bike's down swept expansion chamber. It· made the high-revvin' two-stroker sound like the . thunder of 500 Intermediate third placer Frank McNabb's BSA! It took Jack Langston (Suz) only one lap to get zapped but while he was Ieadin' he was lookin' good. While Langston was haulin' up an uphill comer he shouted back to a good buddy "I'm really tired!" So his friend, who was at the comer on a Suzuki Mini-Cycle, shouted back "Well try harder!" Steiner gun-holed it and passed the cross-through 250 and 500 Expert traffic and led the moto over Ron Adams and Jerry Trojanar (who just got a pipe whipped on his bike). Then Trojnar passed Adams while Langston was pushed back in to the tailin' end of the not so fast part of this group. The big bucks winner on the Pro·Fah special Yamaha (Steiner) was credited with the 250 Expert win over Jack Langston and Jerry Trojnar. Tom Darrah whipped it on most everyone today on his Husqvarna and swept the 500 Expert-class for a good win in front of CZ racer Dennis Chandler. • Frank Steiner and Tom Darrah dice at Saddleback.
