was between Jack Johnson and Tom Smith: by check two on the second loop Johnson had moved into second place and was chasing Fishback. Smith was determined to hang on Johnson's tail and by the finish the three were within sight of each other with Fishback taking the win. This is the third year that the Nevada State Championship Hare and Hound trophy will reside in California. Racing in Nevada is reminiscent oJ California way back when. The Desert People reported 187 entries, with perhaps twenty-five of those coming from California and Arizona. The territory is fresh and most of the riders (and pit racers) are known on sighL The lineup is small enough to allow a real rider's meeting rather than printed instructions and your questions get answered. With so few entries to handle the sponsoring club had time to be friendly, which makes for a pleasant day of racing. Even the weather cooperated, with a light breeze stirring the warm air just enough to keep the dust at a reasonable level. And the California riders loved the course. The markings could have been a little further from the turns, but Fishback said be only blew about half a dozen corners and he certainly wasn't unhappy about it, never overshooting so much that he had to back-track. If the Desert People M.C. members were unhappy about Californians taking their trophy again they certainly didn't show it. In fact they went out of their way to make all of us feel welcome and have extended an invitation for more California riders to join the race nex t year. n byScoU: o C\I s-. The rider most favored to dominate both classes was Orange 'County Cycle's Bruce Baron (YZ). What no . one figured on was that his teammate and close friend, Morris Malone (YZ) was not about to let this happen unchallenged. Both riders were tied for first place until the third moto. Off the line it was Baron first with . Malone back in about fourth place. It looked as if Baron had first overall sewn up until, for some unknown reason, his bike broke, leaving Malone to take first place for that race and even tually the overall win of the day. Malone's tranny wen t completely out except for second and fourth gear after the first moto, but he won anyway. His sheer experience and professional skill made up for mechanical error. The next race to have a great deal of "crowd appeal" was the combined 125 Intermediate/Expert race. Victorious purse snatcher of the day "(as Honda mounted Davey Carlson. At first it dido't look lilte it was going to be a very rewarding day for him. He held the lead quite well in the fITst moto .until his bike fouled out at the end letting second place overall winner Ken Ehlers (Hus) by. Carlson is not in the habit of giving away first place, so in the next motos he proceeded to show the other riders what makes him one of the best 125 Experts we have in California today. He won his other, motos easily. Third place was awarded to another fine Expert, Penton rider David Williams. In the Intermediate class it was Jack Hazard (Hon), who swept his group clean for the overall first place. _.y••• FOR RACERS ONlV!
