Minibike Division, while J abn Dotson wired the Old-Timers even and pretty Lori Ritter cinched the Powder Puff bash. Rick Sylvestri scored higbest in the 100 Novice and a pair of Divisions of 125 Novices were split by Harry Bellecitti and Bob Sullivan. Steve Cunningham and Lou McGaffey split the two divisions of 250 Novice, while Harry Bellecitti andJohn Geddis did the same in Open Novice. Jim Nugent and Dale Yarbrough were the respective winners of the 250'and Open Amateur events. • seA MX By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., NOV. 4 Motocross racing under a BCA sanction returned today to Indian Dunes Park in the Santa Clarita Valley. It did so with a gigantic bang...a total field of 331 riders turned out for the daylo~g warfare that began at nine a.m. Though not a record entry at Thunder Mountain Reservation, the program did feature a record number of ability-loaded, downright tough divisions. While competing on a fantastic, newly-designed Shadow Glen course the large crew was divided into 19 separate racing divisions, with the Experts riding a pair of 20-minute motos and all "trophy" groups going to the starting. gate for three heats each. Jim Hale, after dropping his first moto to Tyran mounted Larry Watkins, came back to win the second heat for 125 Experts, capturing the overall victory. Watkins, who lmished the afternoon as third runner-up to Hale, had the lead once again during the second 2Q-minute, only to throw the chain after a lap or so. Others in the class who had more than their fair shares of difficulties were Cole, Wright and Nick Hale. Oh well, there's always another weekend coming. Jim O'Neal, doing his racing in the 250 Expert division, was a winner in the Ill'St moto, then lost the second encoun ter after a back-and·forther to a Illed-up Rick Salmon. O'Neal, however, still had enough points for a class victory. Tom Simpson recorded a two·one score on his Revell-turned Maico, whipping an outstanding group of Open Experts for the big dollar payoff. It proved to be a simple case of an express. freight! David Ewing got his overall triumph against a large field of mini-cycles. Jan Kline, winning three straight events, caught the Powder Puff win. Craig "Ace" Cole, racing in the 100 Junior class, tallied a one-three-one record and picked up the overall win. With three separate divisions of 125 Juniors sliding for their share of the trophies, divisional victories went to Scott Brown (eight-one-one), David Sobadas and a charging Guy Jaegers. Bill Todd, in spite of the efforts of Blackie Lewis, who was attempting to prove that a '501' Maico will gulp lots of gas when the choke is on, rolled to three straight wins against the Old Timers' Master class. Still other overall victories in events for the Old Timers went to Spike Duncan (Ex.), Norb Brown (Am.) and Dalton Danon, who was doing his riding in heats for the Novices. Bill Barber, who was taking his first ride in the O.T. program, looked "right on" during the second race for the Novice crew. Intermediate wins went to Brett Rooke (125), Mike Green (250) and Dave Hensche, riding amongst the Opens. Ron Roberts and Wayne King collected their overall victories at the expense of two '250' JUnior divisions. King, mounted on a powder-keg Maico, scored his win by a grand slam. Glenn' Ewing, astirde a rocketing Greeves and looking like an excellent candidate for Senior ranks, captured his overall against a classy crew of Open Juniors. • ----11;Ql r-:--=:--~ WHITTI.
