• • • .... e Oooooooooh... Foul _ther gear was necessary. RedwOOd , Continued from page 10 actually ridden the whole course. After going the wrong way he came back and tried a couple of others ways, and finally found the correct route. He was one of only two or three to do so. Most riders finally came in by way of Highway 10 l. When Ben was asked how the course was, he replied, with a hig enthusiastic grin, "It was great!" Then he looked around at all the cold, soggy people and realized that somehow that just wasn't the appropriate response, so he said, "I mean it was hell, but... it was great!" Its hard to say whether he's just impervious to miserable weather or the world's most outstanding masochist. This is the ' second time Ben Bower won the Rattlesnake. Once a few riders had come in, it became apparent that rescue operations were the next order of business so club members and some of the Del Norte County Sheriff's Department took four wheel drive vehicles up into the snow and hauled out some half-frozen riders. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, and there weren't even many bikes left on the mountain by about 10:30 Sunday evening. As you might have gathered, this was not a time-keeper's enduro. In fact, the results probably wouldn't have changed much if they hadn't bothered to bring the clocks. The 20 and 24 MPH scheduled were paten tly impossible under the circumstances. In spite of the miserable weather and turned arrows, most riders thought that it was a good enduro and most everyone liked the course. In that part of the country, it's just expected that the weather will be miserable most of the time, and enduro riders must expect to cope with it. Seems to me like they might have dropped the speed averaged a bit, however, so that there would be some element of time-keeping present in the National Championship Enduro. One of the reasons that this club is ahle to have such a good course is that it is en tirely on private property and thus free from the restrictions that are usually placed on government lands. The three timber companies have been very cooperative with the club members and riders who like good, tough enduros might drop them a note to say "Thanks." This is the lIth Annual run by the - Redwood Scramblers on these lands. • Results: Overall: Ben Bower 962 (Hus) Open A. Open A: 1. Larry Solo 957 (Hus): 2. Robert Mullarky 949 (HuS); 3.
