Deschutes Cycle Park MX By Jan Newman BEND, ORE., OCT. 28 The wind was downrigh t inhospitable today and may have been responsible for the small turnout. It felt as though it had just blown over some nearby glacier even when the sun was shining. Must be time to start packing the longies. The 100 Junior class was unusually small and found itself in the unlikely position of racing with the 125 Experts to start off the day. Tom Gough (Hod) came through with three wins for the 100 J union. The 125 Experts have been running more like a destruction derby here lately. This week Barney Newman's Penton remained operative through the day for first. These guys have been riding so hard and high their wheels won't take it. This week both James Harris (Yam) and Chet Davis (Pen) retired with tire and wheel problems. Hondas made a clean sweep in the 125 Junior class. Billy Jones took the top honors. He went down while leading the first moto and Tim Fellows took the lead with Jones in second. In the whoop-de-doos just before the checkered flag, Fellows went down and Jones went by to win. Fellows came in second behind Jim Reed in the second moto but a seventh place in the third moto put him behind Rick Herbst in the fmalstandings. Reed fmished fourth. It began to look like bad news to be leading the 250 Juniors. Don Bronson (Hon) held a good lead in tl!e first moto until he- encountered a downed slower rider in the worst way. The crash put him out for the day. Mark Smith (Mai) won the mota: In the next race Smith was leading when he threw a chain and wound up in one of those miserable jams. Don Marcoulier went thumping by for first on his Honda four stroke. Smith returned to win the final race but Mareoulier had the poin t lead. The 250 Intenneidate and Open Junior also ran together. Rod Kentner (Yam) was the 250 Intermediate winner in what is becomin!l a weekly battle with Steve Baldwin (Hon). These are a well matched pair. Doug Freeny (CZ) and Dennis Harris (Hon) entered the fmal race with a win and a third each in the Open Junior. Freeny came out on top. The Open Intennediate is almost a private battle, too, between Jeff Hosack (Bul) and Steve Johnston (Mai). This week Hosack was the winner as they rode with the Open Experts. The Expert races were almost like a carbon copy with Randy Limbeck (Pen) fast, Barney Newman (Mon) second and Kevin Nofziger (Hon) third in all three .motos. The Minis fmished the day with Mark Frazier (Yam) winning the Junior trophy and Gary Mack (Hon) taking the Intennediate -hardware. e 13347 W.
