to be misleading llbout handling/shipping charges. Cycle House uses a standard shipping charge schedule used by most firms dealing in mail orders. If the ad had solicited mail orders, and then ignored the question of shipping charges, it would have been called misleading... Ed. • II INSIDE • III Golden State Half-Mile ....6 Rescue Rescue 3 GP or not GP? . John Huetter's article. about the Spanish motorcycle factOries (Oct. ~6) was pretty interesting, but one thlJ~g that he said bothered me. He Said "N obody else in the world is offering this year's GP bikes to the public next year, nobody." Isn't the Yamaha YZ 250 last year's GP bike? STEVE TYLER Humble Yamaha . Humble; Texas To be terse about it, No. However, some privateers were still campaigning 'Yamaha YZs in this year's GPs with limited factory support. They didn't hack it compared to the works machines... Ed. Plastic Peg Grippers I would like to know where I could get a pair of Plastic Fantastic Boots in the test by John Hueher. JIM ROY Bell, Calif. John insists that his name is Huetter. and negotiations on importing the boot into the U.S. are still underway. If everything goes' according to plan, the plasti~ boots will be in the country by the end of this year. We'll let everybody know when we find out since there have been a lot of inquiries about this particular product... Ed. Thanks, I Ne8ded That encourage other high schools to try on-campus motocross;' it really' is worthwhile as many students are involved in motorcycling (students of hoth sexes I might add). Any students or faculty of other, high schools interested in having their own motocross may feel free to contact me for suggestions, hints, etc. that come for our experience. Our students were quite excited at having a wri te up of the MX in Cycle News and so was I. However, I must take exception to two points made in the article. I. Our track coach did not go home and cry. In fact, he supported us throughout the enterprise. If you had come hy our athletic field at 4:00 p.m. Sunday following the race (held on Wed.), you would. have seen NO traces of the mounds, berms, hay hales, tires, etc. The track was back to normal and ready for, the mon ths away track season. Please, Mr. Friedman, don't give balky athletic directors i'D unnecessary reason to halk. 2. Dave Pessy was criticized quite unfairly in your article: Dave did not come to Serra's MX to show off or pick on Novices. He came because I asked him to. In fact, I had to ask him several times. I felt that as the greatest rider in Serra's history, he would be a welcome addition tp a crowd that wanted to see motocross. I asked Dave to show the student body some fast riding, which he did. At the meeting to distribute prizes after the MX, Dave refused to accept any prize (which included motocross boots, leather sleeves, helmets, gloves, goggles and jerseys). Only after I insisted did he take a cheaper pair of goggles. The picture I have of Dave's coming to Serra's MX is one of a person helping out a former teacher by invitation. I think you owe Dave an apology. NED McNABB Dean of Faculty and Moderator Serra High M.C. We do. Sorry, Dave... Ed. Truth in Advertising The Greatest Rider In Serra's History On behalf of the Serra High School administration and Serra High M.C., I would like to thank you for your very helpful support of our recen t on-eampus motocross. Your $50 and very pertinent suggestions were invaluable. Special thanks to Tom Culp who jumped at the chance to help. We will always be grateful to Cycle News along with Curnutt's, "Motocross Action" Magazine, Hockies, American Honda, Hermosa Cycle supply, American Leathers, Buco, Pacific Coast Honda, J .T. Racing, Speed Center, Bill Walters Leathers, Yanl ~e Corp., Chris Agajanian (of I\scot)., Infield Ambulance Co., and especially Stu Peters and Kelvin Franks of €MC for helping us so much. As a high school administrator, I I ordered' a pair of leathers from a Cycle House ad in your Maccb 20 issue, page I I. The leathers and service were good, hut my complaint is with the $5 service charge which was not advertised for mail orders. The charge is pre-set and listed on their catalog order blanks but without the catalog I didn't know it. Another firm only cbarges $ 1.50 for mail orders of leathers. I was deciding between the two, and had I known of the $5, I would ha'(e bought from the other firm. I feel the' advertisement was misleading and we have no place for this in cycling. California welcomes Gary Scott At our October 21 1),.37 Hare and Hound we learned that Rescue 3 of Barstow had blown up their 5000 KW generator at a recent D-37 race and are in need of a new one to operate their mobile unit. The cost is about $3000. The Desert Knights have opened a campaign to obtain a new generator and coUected $65 at our race. We hope that all District clubs, local cycle shops, and inte.:csted people will contribute. Our campaign was opened with a $50 contribution from Guy Louis motorcycle shop in Long Beach. The Desert Knigh ts give fifty cents per rider every week to RescUe 3. This isn't a lot, but it won't take long. Think what it would be like without Rescue 3. All interested parties, please call me. I just received the latest issue of your great paper and J?eing an avid motorcycle rider, racer and spectator, 1 noticed a very important conmcr- in some schedules. Realizing of course that they are two differen t types of racing, a motorcycle spectator is a motorcycle spectator at both types. The Albany, California, AMA National Mile race and the Hang Ten 11.S. Gran Prix are on the same date, July 14, 1974. If the races were in differen t parts of the eountry it would not be a problem but they are only about 600 miles apart (which in our modern space age is only a hop, skip and ajump). Problem: Where do 'you go as :v spectator? The Albany race was great this year but so was the. Hang Ten, there are two other California mile races next year but only one Hang Ten. In my group that goes to both races, we all feel that the Albany race could be moved to the Saturday before, or even traded with another race out of the area. So far, the Hang Ten is favored by my people because it is a one time race. Please Help..... DENNIS McCOMAS Burbank, Calif. The Albany National· Mile is being rescheduled, tentatively for August 4. The Carlsbad Hang Ten GP is still onfor July 14... Ed. Non-8anforized News I didn't know that it was raining last week...but my Cycle News shrunk in the mail. JIM HOWES Lemon Grove, Calif. The operall size is slightly smaller. j,m, but not much. We recently switched printers and the new paper is much lighter stoclr" which makes it seem considerably smaller... Ed. International Jumping I am doing a school project on various stunt artists, and have stumbled across an Ame.rican boy of 15 who 1 can get very Iittie iJiformation on. I'm writing to see if you can give me any old clippings on a Mr. Gary WeUs, who I understand is trying to follow the great Evcl Knievel by jumping cars. 1 would be ever so grateful if you could give me some information on him. Meanwhile let me aplogize for any inconvenience l~ve caused you, and offer you many thanks in advance. JOSEPH M. SHELBOURNE Cheyenne, Wyoming MR.
