This .year they had some 780 enter (about double last year's figure) but fortunately only about 560 actually showed up to ride. Undoubtedly, a few of those who paid but didn't ride thought they were signing up for a Sunday event, but the Fool's Gold is on Saturday, and it says so on every piece of paper that the CERA sends ouL Some people, though, don't read or maybe just don't believe. What to wear for an enduro in unfamiliar country is alWll}'1 a problem. This run was in gold mining country, already pretty high. up and the poster said jet for 6000 feeL One of the local riders who'sscooterlooked like it bad about a million miles on it toJd me earnestly "Don't wear a Barbour jacket. You'l cook when you get on the sunny side of the mountain in the middle of the morning." He was def'mitely right, but what he didn't explain was how to keep from freezing to death until you get on the sunny side of the mountain. Ten miles from the start of this run you're in woods so deep the sun has only been seen three times since Christmas (the first one, that is) and you're riding in three inches of fresh snow. If you're riding with motocross gloves, your fingers get - numb very quickly, all the way up to your armpits. If you're just wearing a sweatshirt, the space between your armpits isn't all that warm either. ~ Fortunately, about ten miles out there was a hill with some nice slippery rocks on it.. There were a bunch of guys scattered all over pushing up. It looked like a pretty easy hil) to ride so I couldn't figure out what was gOIng on., Then 1 realized - they were getting warm. So I aimed right for the thickest pack and when I couldn't go any farther, I started pushing too. It was greaL In no time at all I was nice and toasty again. And 10 minutes late. As the run progressed, one thing became obvious. This was one for woods riders; not fireroaders. It was one single file track after another and in a good many places, the trail was just a path somebody had made with a machete or chain saw, cutting the saplings off about six inches from the ground. This was not a run for guys who don't like jumping logs, either, because all t/lose cut down trees were left right where they fell_ It's those greasy little three-inch logs lying diagonally aeross the trail that always get you_ The big trees, of course, were left standing as long as there was room between them for a pair of thirty-inch bars to go through. If your bars were more than thirty inches and you were riding on schedule (21 MPH) you were all right because going that fast you'd just bend the bars back a little so they'd fit the next time. The trouble is that I can't ride that fast in the woods, so the first time I tried to, I just wedged the bars in tight. I didn't have enough momentum to carry me through, or more correctly, to get the bike through. I went through all right. You'd be surprised how tightly wedged a pair of bars can get if you don't ride fast enough. Took three of us to get the bike unstuck. Gradually. the pattern of the enduro' began to emerge. If there was even one scrap of fireroad in a section, even 50
