Three miles of fire road, and then through a technical insp"ction and out onto a paved highway. At 24 MPH it was Fat City, and il was toollood to last. At mile 120 and hour 6:49, it was off the highway onto a 15 MPH jeep road, ang? then down into a creek: Boulders, cobbles, soft sand, and water; Up on the pegs, or else paddle. Two miles of this and then the tiebreaker check, the end of the clean scores for the loop and more points for everyone else. The checkers and the organizers were called everything but nice. "Ambush'" "Massacre!" A couple of morc miles of this and then it was back on the saddle and in to the pits. High overall, and the Arizona State Championship, went to Carl· Price, a Californian on a 175 Mettco Penton with a score of seven. Of sp"cial in terest is the second place 125B which was won by Jerry Elson, the Forest Service Ranger that was so helpful last year. He's a good guy; we need more like him. Ron Wells rep"ated his 1 97 2 1 25 B win. Defending champion John Venzie of Tucson was unable to pull it off again this year, but did trophy as a member of the third place team. Californians took 14 of the 31 trophies given. As scoring was done using flip cards, trophies were awarded by 5 :00 that afternoon. Shortly after the trophy presentation the Superstition REACT search and rescue group declared the course clear, with all riders in and accounted for. REACT, by the way did a hell of a job, they are indispensible. The worst injury was a broken foot; no one feU off the moun tain, or was run over by a deer hunter, contrary to the dire predictions of detractors. Overall it was a damn fine enduro. The course was lough, and the speeds were fast, but it wasn't impossible, and there wasn't a foot of the course that was unrideable for anyone of modest talent. The club is considering adding a couple of score keeping sections next year to encourage the B riders. However, nearly everyone enjoyed this year's event, and some said it was one of the best they'd ridden in years. Sixty-six riders collected their tee shirts. After 127 miles and seven and a half hours in the saddle p"rhaps they can best appreciate that on the shirts above "Tonto 100 Massacre" .it says "Survivor!" • Results: Hign Overall: Carl Price (P.ln) 7. 125A: 1.
