Junior class with John Nuenburg and Robbie Hohstadt third and fourth. Greg Ferguson traveled all the way from Sacramento to take the top money away from "Smiling" Scottie Urabe who tried every which way to get by Ferguson in the 250 Expert class. Benny King held off Fenn Pernier for third place. off, sidelining him as Andy Whitaker had done in the 250 Junior. The number one man from Nevada, Manuel Crummett, then took the lead and had a good duel with Ted Davidson and his new Cycle Speed Kawasaki. The deepness of the dirt wasn't doing Teddy any good and he just couldn't get a line that would work and that was the end. Ifus4varna and CZ owners: have we eot a Hi,",ni earlluretor eonversion lIit for ~u! San Joaquin Short Track Finale By Bill Spencer STOCKTON, CAL., OCT. 14 valerian's. The original Mikuni carburetor conversion kit for Huskys and CZs. And the only one that really works! District 36 short track white plate races pretty much ended for the 1973 season and with little flourish, at that. The number one sport was decided some time back and next year's number one white plate wasn't even around for this run although number two, Dennis Robinson, was still looking for some points and nearly got some. The San Joaquin fairgrounds seemed unapproachable for motorcycle use except for the annual benefit scrambles up un til this year when some enthusiasm got going. The little horse arena run on today may graduate into an indoor exhibition hall for indoor short track and some of the clubs are' trying to talk the managers into the use of the mile. Good luck ... This fmal even t on the deep dirt shorty was indicative of what good organization can do for racing. The series was rather new and had been running nights, but went to daytime for this last event. Running mini's as well as sportsman made for the usual running events problems and sorting out racers, but really well done for such a small club as the Stockton Scramblers. The crew has a lot of racers who still like to run, but except for the manpower changes as each guy took his tum, the event progressed rapidly. Chris Carr is fast becoming known as the little kid who falls, gets up, falls again, gets up again, and then goes on to win the 50cc Novice event. While there might be only two riders, it is still good racing and his stock Moto-Villa prototype miniature is a kick. In the combined 125 Junior/Expert main, the battle for first was between Johnnie Kohle and his 100cc Honda and Mike Miller on a 125 Bultaco. Kohle is a style rider and was doing just that for the main with Miller just able to keep up. The track length is not enough where the horsepower 'makes all that much difference unless one can get set up real well, and wi th a banzai charge that Kohle had going; it was just tough to stay close. But, Miller made an effort about three laps from the end. Drawing a close in line off the last turn, Miller turned up the wick to WFO and tried a sneak attack on in the inside. Conveniently, Kohle left an opening into the apex but then suddenly closed it, as if he all of a sudden saw the Bul coming. The door closed fast enough that Miller unloaded high side and Kohle went on to the checkered and still styling, did a get off right in front of the grandstand, complete with a V sign. Geoff Lowe, turned Junior, put on a good show in the 250 Junior main downing the Triumph Cub of Jeff Sierck and Rod Murphy's Bultaco. The Oakdale high pointer is turning into one of the better short trackers around and next year should be a good shot for the white plate list. Brian O'Hagan won his first main event in some time riding a Champion framed Honda that seems to be the most popular item to get hold of these days. Steve Ferroni kept him honest all the way, but couldn't out horsepower him at any point. In the 360 Junior main Ray .·ord rolled up to the staging ,Iipe kind of wondering what to expect and not seeing any other bikes around just figured he had done something wrong, but he didn't and got to ride only one lap. He was the only one left of four rideis and for his efforts, he got turned upwards to the Experts ranks. Dennis Robinson, running second for most of the season's whit.e plate activities, looked like a winner in the 360 Expert main unt.il the mid-point when his borrowed Bultaco electrics fell The kit that improves efficiency, torque characteristics and fuel consumption, Stops loading up, Eases startups, And -gives more docibility, The'kit.lhat comes with a complete range ·of jets good from -§ea level to 8,000: The kit you can bolt on in less than an hour, The custom-designed kit that looks like it's "factory installed:' _.. .. By Patrick Neil DIXON, CAL., OCT. 14 Two men, both named Danny, dueled in the 250 Expert class with Dan ,Leet taking overall honors. Jeff Loff took the Open Expert with most of the action taking place behind him for the second position. The new track surface, a mixture of rice chaff and natural soil, does the trick as far as keeping the dust away, but for those of us with allergies, it makes for a long day. Most riders had favorable comments agreeing that too much of the mixture caused excessive wheelspin. It's great for falling on, too. At rider's meeting, the word was put out that the rider who finished first in the race with the most laps would take the win in case of tie., As .,!sual, the second set of motos was shortened. The best race of the day was the 250 Expert. Danny Leet (Mai) had taken the lead, with Charlie Marshall (Han) right behind. In third for the fIrst lap was Danny Turner (KTM). However, the race was red-flagged and all the riders had to return to the line. Once again the rubber-band was stretched across the 18 Experts. when it let loose the second time, Danny Leet again had the hole-shot and came exploding out of the llfst comer with everyone else trying to catch him. Marshall was in hot pursuifLeet was doing the big sweeper speedway style and Charlie tried to nose in under Danny. The Maico rider simply gave it a little more gas causing the bike to cross up just enough to close the door on the much too close Honda. Charlie's front wheel made contact with Danny's rear and Charlie Marshall ate it in the sweeper. Danny Turner took over second place, but to no avail as Danny Leet took the flag first. Turner was second. The second round saw Turner and Leet again dueling for position. The two riders fought for a while, but Leet let off towards the end and let the fron t running Turner take it. It was common knowledge that the moto had been shortened, so all Leet had to do was hang on to second in order to win overall. And that's what he did. The Open Experts were shut out by the very fast Maico of Jeff Loff. In both motos, Jeff simply pulled the entire field to go away wi th the win for the day. The racing was for the other pasi tions behind Jeff. Chris Willems and John Due were swapping the second position. Willems had come up from seventh to challenge the 360 YZ and caught the bigger bike. However, the 250 YZ of Willems just couldn't keep up on straighaways so John Due 'finished the day second overall. • .
