"When you'tt: that close, it's who's up front that counts", could have been said many times tonighL There was a lot of tigh t. fast action. RIDE WITH' THE BEST Benton County Fairgrounds 1IB-Mile Dirt Short Track Story & Photos by Patrick Neil 'By Kathy & Shirley Campbell Photo by Jeff Scoville DIXON, CAL., OCT. 21 Taking the 125cc class by storm today at Argyll Park, Danny Turner No.2 Blue Plate of District 36 took two firsts on the smaller of the two machines he rides. The first moto saw Henry Halback gi ving the very fast Turner trouble. Several times Halback challenged the leader, but to no avail. The second moto saw Halback finish fourth, but his total points gave him a second overall against Turner. Turner took home his second purse for the day when he cinched the overall win in the 250 class with two first places. In the first race, Danny Lane paced the leader for a while as did several of the other riders, but at the end of a1loted time, Turner remained the leader. The second moto saw Russell Powell give Turner a good chase. This was the fourth moto for 'turner so you can appreciate his winning this one. Powell too second overall for the class. Jeff Loff, very much overshadowe by the success of Danny Turner, but despi te the pressure of the presence of Dick Mann, kept his cool and completely outran the rest of the Open Experts. Loff, on his trusty Maico, got the hole shot both races and that was all Jeff needed. Jeff has won every race I've seen him run in. 1 guess Jeff is used to seeing onlIY the course in front of him, at least for the first few tours until he starts to lap the slower riders. That was the pattern today as Jeff took two firsts to sew up the Open Experts races. So it was at the much improved course at Argyll Park today, two local boys, both hero.s on another Sunday in the sport of mo tOCTOSS. CORVALLIS, ORE., OCT. 13 When riders get tired of riding in the hills and it's getting dark and cold outside, what could be better tharra good indoor short track? This is certainly a differen t type of racing, getting more popular all the time. There are few indoor tracks In this area so Corvallis is drawing riders from all over Oregon and Washington. The race is held in the fairgrounds barn and when the horses are let out, the bikes take over. If you stop and think about it, that is quite an exercise in co-existence. The riders were more than ready to start a night of fast racing and ~e w. By Joan Worth MONTEREY, CAL., OCT. 20 Wi th one race to go in a five race series, the competition gets heavier, the riders faster, and the 1/8 mile oval track rougher. Young Steve Harvey, a consistant fmisher did himself proud by taking a fITSt in both the 100cc and 250cc Novice classes. Chris Dinner made it two in a row by leaving Kurt Smelzer in second place in the 125cc Novice class. The two Steve's, Long and Grier will soon be joining the Experts with their usual top finishes in the 125cc Junior class. The starter seems to have it in for David Worth, 125cc Ex. Dave has ended up in the back row almost as much as Danny Ferguson who has I"'0n the 200cc Junior class each week regardless of his handicap. Geof. Lowe and Danny Hogue ran 1-2 the entire seven laps in the 250 Manuel Crummet I1nl, the badman from Nevada, liked the deep dirt. Tid Dnidson (8) second.
