That Doug Nicol(fim Ochoa battle can tinued in the Minicycle class again, with Timmy taking the overall this week when Nicol had troubles and finished last in the second mota. Doug won the other two to earn second. Greg Toyama (Ban) continues to dominate the 100 Jrs. and he did it with another sweep over 19 other riders. Final wins went to Paul Needles (Car) in the 125 and Dennis Wrenn (Han) in the 250. Donald Cox nearly swept the 500 Jrs. but wound up third in the final, still good enough to guarantee the overall win over Greg Mitchell (Yam). Cox was Maico mounted. • cz ••• FIRST IlGIlIN!! ,CZ 400 'aDd Jim Fishback AME Indian Dunes FiDish Fini Overall, 15 MiDDies Ahead of SecoDd Place. By John Grout VALENCIA, CAL., OCT. 5 Following the trend of the past few months, the three motos for 125 Experts once again became a focal point during tonight's AME-sanctioned motocross racing .program on the high-speed International course at Indian Dunes Park. As explosive a bunch as ever sat on a saddle at Thunder Mountain Reservation assembled for mota warfare this evening. The group included Jim Hale, Joe Root, Pug Ferreira, Gary Huber, Mike McAtee, Victor Triepke and Rick Kershaw, among others. But Hale and Root both retired during different heat races with mechanical problems; McAtee and Kershaw both retired for unknown reasons - though those reasons must have been substantial, what with the tight run for championship points now developing at the Dunes. Hale, on the swift Penton for Kendick Engineering, nonetheless scored an overall 125 victory, scoring a pair of wins and pushing across the finish line in the remaining mota. While Ferreira, just two points back, finished as first runner-up. Triepke was third, a mere few digits in front of Huber and Root. Jeff Blix, astride a rocketing Yamaha from Ted Evans' store, walked off with three straight mota wins against the 250 Experts. Among those closest to Blix in the overall tally were Dan Whitlock (Han), Tom Bates (CZ), Steve Miller (Kaw) and Rob Gorham (CZ). The overall win for 500 Experts was a tigh t battle all the way, with Rick Mercier yanking out a narrow decision over Randy Schmitz and Don Ricks. Schmitz, on a fast CZ, led all three divisional motos from the starting gate, but in the latter stages of each event, found himself unable to hold back Maico riding Mercier. Young Mike Jackson, racing a Honda for Honda of Glendale, dropped the first minicycle moto to Indian-mounted Steve Schmitz, only to return full of run while copping the remaining heats for an excellent overall victory against the squirts in the dirt. Runners-up included Schmitz, Greg Johnston (Hon) and Mark Ballestero (Ind). Winning their respective 100 Novice and Beginner divisions were Angelo Barbera (Pen) and Ray Fischer (Yam). While 125 victories went to Craig Egerman (Han) and Steve Hickok (Yam). A total of 43 riders were entered in the events for 125's. Ken Smith (OSS), Manny Angulo (CZ), and Ron Winkelman (Yam) found themselves locked in a tie for an overall triumph entering the final round for 250 Beginners. The three had four points each, but Smith decided the issue by winning that last moto. Lonnie Orr, astride still another of those Express-Train Hondas that appear to be a regular product of Tom Sawyer Honda in Saugus, tallied an outstanding 1-1-3 score against a strong field of 250 Juniors, as he kept his trips to the winner's circle intact for the third straight week. Among those finishing behind Orr were Bob Vege, a charger all the wayan a Revell sponsored Honda; John Mellin (CZ), and Jon Wiedenman on a CZ. Taking, victories against the 500 Junior and Beginner divisions were Slip "The River Skate" Sliden (CZ) ·and Danny Ferreira (Mai). • The 4th annual Check ~hase Hare & Hound held Saturday, Oct. 13 found 1100 riders lined up in 90 degree heat to make "the run to the river", two hundred and fourteen grueling miles of rock, sand, and sage brush, Start: Soggy Dry Lake, California. Destination: Parker, Arizona. Only 295 riders finished this event with CZ mounted Jim Fishback pulling in first overall, having made all five checks. His win was not without incident though. At the smoke bomb he lost his goggles, stopped ,to find them...then was back in the hunt. By check two he was running third ...Some of his closest competiton was out by this point...By check three -he held a four minute lead...Jim was feeling the heat and ready to rest, but the CZ 400 hadn't had enough ... On to checks four and five, over_ the river, only 48 more miles to go..The finish: Jim didn't feel much like celebrating his win; just sit, relax and get a cold drink... Fifteen minutes passed before second place.showed ...Jim said his CZ never missed a beat. CZ winner of the I.S.D.T. Dalton, Mass., Sept. 17-22 cz= YOD CaD CODDI OD II!
