It took the leader of the 0-250 Am/Ex class about 9:30 to get around the
5% mile course. The first round that was Stan Smith. Larry Pfutzenreuter
had moved up along with Doug Winchell. Smith lost his pipe on the second
lap and Pfutz was pushing hard enough to take over the lead on lap three.
Winchell was second, Matt Betton (Bull was in third and Jeff Wright
(Puc) had moved from a thirteenth row start to fourth. The four front-runners
shifted places as they pined and ran into traffic around the sticky, tight, clay
river crossing. By lap eight, Betton had a good lead over second place Jeff
Wright and that's the way they finished. Matt was'first on his 250 Maico and Jeff,
back after' a long lay-off, second on his Chuck Daly-tuned 175 Puch. '
Charlie Curnutt's Husky featured prototype gas suspension that is receiving
