Page 29 October 16, 1973 The 250 Beginners always show a lot of enthusiasm. Getting the power to the ground effectively is another story, even with the tacky traction a,t Baymare. Bay Mare Motocross Zaps On much slower. Bay Mare makes you want to mo tocross very, very rapidly...and some riders do. • By Scotty Schafer MOORPARK, CAL., OCT. 7 The Beginner's classes were packed today, but it was the Experts that wowed the crowd, as, Dale Tittlemeier used track savvy Bob Norgaard and his CCM didn't finish, but flew while they ran. elapsed, and even then the officials weren't too sure about what had happened. Meanwhile, Jim Fishback (CZ) got past Cordis BTooks (Bul) about halfway through the mess to take third overall, and second 250 Pro, behind Baker (Kaw). Brooks was third 250 Pro. Silverthorn was listed as the first Open Pro followed by Nils Nilsson (Hus), and last' year's Barstow-ta-Vegas winner, Tom Smith (Yam). Another hot controversy flared up in the 125 Sportsman class, with Rick Hendrickson (Pen) being given the win over Jack Boles (Mnk). Boles rode a fantastic race in spite of a Girling that bent into a "V" about halfway to the checkered flag. He breaks a lot of shocks, and is hunting for a brand that will both fit and perform. Charges were being made by some uninvolved spectators . that Boles should have been granted the win because Hendrickson rode one bike on SaturdilY, and another on Sunday. Na proof to back up the charge could be produced, and it is unclear whether a protest will be filed with the already confused race officials. Bill Glore, a high school freshman riding a Honda Elsinore 125 with a broken motor mount, did in all the Amateurs for the overall win, just like on Saturday. He led Ed Popelka (Man), 250 Amateur winner, and Tom Derwin (Yam) Open Amateur winner. The officials couldn't make up their minds who won in some of the Sportsman catagories. It is still unsure if HYJIles repeated his Saturday 250 Sportsman win. One rider who was not (surprisingly enough) involved in a scoring hassle ~as David Shafer (Bul), who has a mce wife and baby, and has never had his name in print before. Th.e scoring conflicts kept getting in the way of trophy presentations and results finalization. First the trophies . were to be handed out at 6 p.m. When 6 p.m. came, the time was bumped. to 6 :30. When 6 :30 came, tentatIve winners were told that they would be mailed their trophies as soon as the judges could --.figure out who actually won. Groans and moans filtered up as the crowd dispersed, while a near-riot took place over the scoring of the car race which was held after the bike race. MilOkey Thompson was seen to fire off a few words at an irate car driver, and then disappeared. He haSn't been seen since. • Kllus Nilsson of Team Husky in the great rider's meeting debate. and a big CZ to sweep the Open Expert and take an overall win in the combined Expert/Intermediate classes. Mike Maroney grabbed the 250 Expert while Ron Acevedo and John Pfeiffer swapped places behind him. The conclusion of Randy Berkeley's flying demonstration (off the Anthill) took him out of contention for the day. Tony DelaTorre got the distance record off Banzai Hill's backside, but could only maintain a steady second behind Russ Ferguson's 125 Honda. Rick Maricle went very fast for the 250 Novice win, fighting off the similar CZ's of Greg Starczak and Bret Wilkinson. Mike Galloway and Skip Reuter rode tire-to-tire through the final mota, with Calloway grabbing the overall. Foster Chase flopped on the steep Banzai Hill in the fast last hundred Novice mota, but still edged out Jeff Drummen. Rider attendance was up at this pro-designed and well-prepared track, but not enough to ensure its survival. The Experts go incredibly fast on this SoCal off-eamber tribute to the European riders, with the Beginners not Tony DelaTorre rode one of his father's machines to a seCond overall in the 125 Expert dass. He aviated Banzai Hill as well as anybody. CMC MX at Ascot By John Bethea GARDENA, CAL .. OCT. 3 Dave Pessy celebrated a fullfactory Honda ride tonight by, topping the very difficult 250 Expert class at Ascot Park, a class which included proto-Cooper mounted Billy Payne. Pessy was moved up to the factory team' to fill the vacancy created with the leaving of Gary and DeWayne Jones from the team. He plans on picking up the final five Trans-AMA events when they reach the West Coast. He went in to the final mota with two seconds but first on points as both Payne and Bob Hosford (Han) each had a bad round to go along with their mota victories. In a wild five lapper of a fmale, Pessy grabbed the win and the overall with Hosford edging out Payne for second both in the race and overall. The 125's were about as close as you can get. Both Mark Tyer (Pen) and Chuck Bower (Pen) ended up with a first, second and third and tied for the overall on points. Tyer, however, won the deciding third mota and that acted as the tie-breaker. What was so splendid about Mark's win was that he and Bruce McDougal (Pen) bad spilled right at the start of the first mota. Before it was over Tyer, who re-entered in ninth, was second behind Bower. Mark had to thank Dave Carlson (Han) after the fmal event because it was - Dave's second place finish in the mota which created the tie and the overall for him. Had Bower succeeded in one of his continuous bids to get by for second, Chuck would have won it. Payne switched over to his big Maico for the 5OO's and went into the final tied with Bob Messer (Mai) with a win and second each. He pulled out the win and the overall while Bob slipped down to third but he still held the runnerup spot on points over Bill Rubly (B&S) . . Again Doug Nicol (Han) and Timmy Ochoa (Han) put on three wild scrambles in the Minicycle class and Doug pulled it out narrowly overall and in two of the three races. David Bush and Warren Reid, both on Hondas, had close dices in the 125 Intermediates with Bush's one-one-two topping it. Warren won their final encounter for second. And Dan Davis came from a 'first mota eighth to win the fmal two 250 Inters and secure the overall from Kelly Bautista (CZ) and fast-mota winner Jim Lee (Oss). Pat Mulvihill (BuI) out-rode the 500 Intermediates as he nears his transfer to the pros. • • \..
