Page 21 October 16, 1973 Expert Main, Bob Scally. Bob was about to be disqualified from his trophy until it was pointed out that he isn't the only Expert running around trying to get some racing in his own district. The controversy rages although the district will sti11 allow them to compete. The biggest controversy came with the running of the 650 Experts. For the past few weeks, they just haven't been together and troubles have ensued. Today was no different with one restart being called and a change in the start line causing a minor fracus when local favorite Alex Jorgensen went down with some others. It wasn't all bad for Alex as he survived for a third in the 125 Expert on board a brand new Moto-Villa, imported by Bob Swanson. Craig Scroggins has been dominating that scrambles class when Mark Smith's DKW isn't around. Now that Danny Castellano is back in action, the rest of the season might produce some better competition. . With double points all around, quite a few riders were signed over to higher classifi'cations and most obvious were John McRae's win in the 250 Novice and Bob Holloway's similar sting in the 350 Novice. Both haye received the word. . Witb the ending of the benefit even ts, the season now winds down to a dull roar with only a few events a week. That means it's time to get the knobbies out for winter scrambles. .HBig bike" riders showed a determined style today also as position changes were numerous and getoffs common. Local racer Davis Winters captured the 100 Novice Main .easily over Ray Thissen's Kawasaki and Steve Nicholas, a penalty line starter who worked his way through the pack for the last trophy spot. Suzuki rider Mike Miller of Ceres outgunned the Kawasaki of Danny Burton and the Suzuki of George Wells for an impressive win in the 125 Junior-Expert class. In the 250 ranks, starter Tom Jones powered his Honda to a close win over Nevada riders Woody Chesnut .and Bill Smitlt in the Novice division while Mike LupoId of Sparks comfortably won the Junior event over Luke Holbrook and George Wells. In the only Expert race of the day, black plate rider Ted Davidson followed an impressive heat win by snuffing the troops on his Cycle Factory Kawasaki even with a penalty row start. Fellow Modestan Danny Mills also an impressive heat winner - might have won the J;Ilain as he was the only frop t rower left on the starting line, but his mot,?r quit on the fourth lap and "Torco" breezed to the checker ahead of Fenn Pervier and Chris Hudson. Future white plate events at this track on Saturday night, October 6, and Sunday afternoon, October'14, promise more excellent racing for area short track fans. "The First Time Ever" for Stockton Fairgrounds Short Tr.ack McGill Cycle Park Opens By Ann Carr Photo by Johny Ramos , STOCKTON, CAL., SEPT. 23 Over 100 riders treked down the valley today to race short track at this facility for the first time. The riders were blessed with 75 degree sunshine, cool breezes, and a sandy loam racing surface which repelled valley rains from the night before and provided a tac.ky but rough track for extremely competitive racing. The Stockton Scramblers, noted primarily for their minibike races at Lodi, ran a smooth "big bike" show today with a few problems. Riders experienced lots of laps, few restarts and each rode at least twice in today's 38 event program of six-lap heats and eight-lap mains. Minibike racers, always interesting to watch, provided some excellent events today also. Six-year-old 'Novice Chris "Crash" Carr came from a last place start on his prototype Moto-Villa to a: win in the 50cc class as he slipped by two riders on the inside of the pit turn for a clean pass and the checkered flag. In the 60cc Novice-Junior race, Novice riders Tony Holdsclaw of Modesto and the Richards brothers of' Herald aced the Juniors for the three trophy spots. The 70cc Junior-Expert event was snapped off by Junior riders Steve Crawford of Sacramento and Brian Thompson of Livermore. Advanced riders had trouble beating lower division riders throughout the program at this event. G'RAND PRIXAT FREMONT RACEWA 11 Miles No. Of San Jose, Durham Rd. Off Hwy. 17 1 Man 1 Hour SAT. & SUN.
