Page October 16, 1973 Jeff Sexton' I.) and Dan Becker show different styles. Sexton rode with a broken foot. went sliding along on his head but went on to win the Scratch Main. Costa Mesa, Cal., Oct. 5 Mike Bast will be going into the U.S. Nationals with a perfect score of 30 points. The third round of qualifying was held here tonight and Mike did a repeat of his first round of qualifying by beating everyone on the track, including the current champ, Rick Woods. Rick lost three points during the meet and ended up with 12 points for second. Larry Moon, Bill Cody and Mike Konle were in a three way tie for third and Bill Cody came out on top. Mike got fourth and Moon fifth. For the third time in his speedway career, Jeff Sexton will be on the sidelines looking in because he was injured in a pile up Friday night when Barclay Trehall beat him at the finish line, doing a wheelie with no place to go. He set his bike down on Jeff's footpeg but J eU's foot was still there, and both riders went down. Jeff limped off the track without a word and went on to ride three more races that night, trying to earn his spot in the finals. His total score for the two rounds is only 14 points, and until this Thursday night at Irwindale and the last round of qualifying, it is hard to say if that would be enough. But with a broken foot, it won't make a lot of difference to this young lion. There are only 14 riders that have had both their chances at qualifying so it is very hard to say who won't be in the finals. Low scores include Steve Nutter with only six points after two rioes, Barclay Trehall with seven, Mark Cherf at 10, and a half a dozen other riders that will have to turn in a dazzling score in the last round to make up for a low score in the first. Bill Gary missed all night and ended up with a zero. On his first time out, Bill Meister got one poin t, Greg Haserot has three, Troy McKee holds the same as does Dave Galvin. At three points you're most likely to be dropped by the wayside. With one round to go, it looks like the breaking poin t will be around 16 points. At 16 is Rick McMurray, a Northern California rider, Mike Konle at 18 trails Bill Cody with 23, Rick Woods· with 25 and Mike Bast with 30. Dan Becker, Steve Bast, Joe Henry, Sumner McKnight, Mike Curoso, Larry Shaw, Sonny Nutter and all the rest will have at it if they're going to, this Th ursday night. • Stories and Photos by Dennis Greene IRWINDALE, CAL., OCT. 4 Debbie Reon, the young lady that has been making the Class Criders at Ascot take a long look at her capabilities, came out tonight to give it a go on the big 1~ Debbie Reon continues the distaff penetration of the short ovals and unintentionally earns Smallest Speedway rider lebel.
