Join the American Motorcycle Association. Association wiD present the second points round of the California State Championship. Indian Dunes has been chosen because of the availibility of food and drink plus good spectator areas along the shade trees along the stream. An easy path leads to the more distant sections. There is little doubt that trials is becoming more popular for the weekend riders. Time, distance and available land has made and will continue to make trials even more popular. This event encourages the weekend trai1 bike rider to try the Novice class, for it is designed for the beginner, whatever he rides. There wiD be 20% trophiel awarded (starting about 4 p.m.) to the kids, women, Novice. Amateur, Expert and the Master class. Sign up will start at 9 a.m. and the event will begin at lOam. The last event drew about 700 spectators to the first round, and there were 166 competitors, and more expected this round. First·time spectators should bear in mind that observed trials is not a race. It is a form of individual competition, where speed does not determine the winner. One rider at a time enters a section, with set boundaries (red stake on the left an blue; on the right), the terrain varies and is all natural. The rider must pass through with his feet on the pegs. If he puts his feet down it is called a "dab", and one penalty point is given for each dab. After a total of three, the rider is not penalized for more dabl. A maximum of five points is given for going out of the boundarie!o stopping. dismounting to push or knocking over the boundary stakes. Among the top six trialsmen from the first round are two northern California favorites, Robert Tyson and Steve Darrow. Lane Leavitt, considered by many the nation'l best trials rider, is now back in Michigan with Robert Tyson for their National Trials. It is hoped Lane will be present for the second round; be is always a threat. Lane was also the State Champion in 1971. In 1972 Marland Whaley became California State Champion. The age of 15 seems very yOUDI to advance to the most difficult class in trials, but there are two exceptional lads who accomplished this in the past few yean - Marland Whaley and Bernie Schrieber. In the firlt round of the state championship Marland was rD'lt and Bernie was second. Marland is No.1 in point standings in the ATA and bas the ATA No.1 plate for 1974 with Bernie presently No.2, but several top contenders are also after that same No. 2 plate. Indian Dunes (Valencia, Calif.) is very easy to fmd; take U.s. 5 to 126 off ramp west, and continue west about 2 miles to the park. Admission is $2 adult. under 15 $I and under 6 free. . For those who enjoy camping, 1 mile from U.s 5 is the Travel Vilage. It is automobile club approved ..:. providing showers, restrooms. recreation and game rooms, general store, and for those wbo like to rouch it cable TV. The campground is exacdy 1 mile from Indian Dune.. •
