problem at the well-organized track
today.
Ron Roneau sweated his Husky over
the magazine-style off-cambers all day,
and got last pick of the Monarch
Distributing contingencies. The
demanding track took its toll of bikes
and bodies, as only Rod Cowell and
Buddy Romano finished in 250
Intermediate, with Romano moving his
CZ from fourth to third to second
overall. Tom Grant blasted his little
Penton ahead of the bigger bikes in the
mixed class for the 125 Expert win, but
it was Randy Berkeley on the
m.ticulously prepared 250 Maico who
set the race pace for the three
20-minute motos.

Today was the "Day of the
Novice'~ . at Bay Mare, with all
classes heavy on position 'changes
(the winners got to kiss an otter
instead of a trophy girl). Art Mara
kicked off the first Open moto with a
big first, then had to make his way
through Maico dust for the last two as
Keith Rider flashed
round the
beautifully laid out course in the lead.
Bill Bledsoe had a similar situation in
250 Novice, winning the first and last
motos. Mike Hogan aced him in moto
two and was pulling away from the pack
in the final when his throttle stuck on a
lumpy downhill. It was Jammin' Jeff
Black who set the crowd to buzzing,
however, as' the broad-backed 125
Novice methodically ate up Banzai, the
Bowl, the Anthill, the IT jump, and all
his competitors for three motos. Black's
timing and course savvy was near
perfect. His little Suzuki responded in
like fashion, though it was Tim Cunis
whose Koni-clad Penton turned the
twisty course into a series of rougly
connected straight lines.
After the world's longest rider's
Jeff Black blasted the 125 Novices.
meeting (at which many rules abou t pit
racing, "Expert" Beginners, and the like
were mentioned - and as it turned out,
honestly enforced), the minis attacked
the fast course. Brian Tubbert and
Jimmy Bushy's wee - Yammie oiled
gassers swept the 6Occ, while unbeatable
Jerry Little led a Honda bos~ in the
XR-75, uh, 61-80 class.
Steve Hadie.y made it look easy in
100 Novice, overrevving to first place in
two motos and sacking second behind_
Dave Spaniol in another. Steve Higgins
had his beginners Kawasaki in with the
Novices, and Doug Collins couldn't
quite match his speed. All the hundreds
rode faster than usual, to guarantee.
fmishing ahead of fast Cheryl Acres and
Lynn Musgrove, who were competing in
the lIli:.
