Now when URA promotes a family enduro it is easy - wilen they promote 'a tough enduro it's usual! d~manding of even an "AU rider. However, once a year URA lets Joe and Larry out of their cages to diabolically layout (their soon to become classic), Little Tuffy Enduro. "A" riders were told it would be tough ..,d fun; "B" riders were told it would be tought and very little fun; "C" riders were called on the phonc and told how By James Wallis ,RED MOUNTAIN, CAL., SEPT. 30 "Ladies and Gentlemen, have I got a deal for you. Would we call Joe and Larry sadists - if so, what do.s 'that make us and the 500 entries Masochists, Joe and Larry say! The normally well organized URA group again proved that hard work, cooperation and lots of course marking time pays off. Compared to last year's run I think it .was a little harder but marked much better. All the ch.cks seemed to be managed well and all but one seemed to be right on. The course itself started on a fun road that wound around Red Mountain, then turned to cross 395 at the Aero' station; from this we climbed up sev.ral steep hills to finally reach (;overnment peak at about six milcs out. A sign pointing down at this point showed you wh~re to go. It was fantastic! A downhill that as you looked got steeper and steeper until the only way to see the run was to just push on over the side. As I was taking some, pictures at the top of the hill'a guy on a CZ looked over my shoulder at this downhill and said "Mah Gawd, there must be some mistake." This was only the beginning you see, because at the end of the first loop the course ran along th. base of Red Mountain then straigh up on a rough rocky road that ended at the saddl. between the two peaks of the mountain. Now, last year they ran us up this way but we turned Idt at th. top and went down a narrow rock canyon. wi th a speed average of 2 MPH. However, this year at the same spot you went straight about 100 more feet to go down a super steep powder/shale hill that emptied into a canyon that was harder than.last year's and had a higher speed average. I scratch my helmet when I think about that one. Well, they said it was going to be tough. We finished that loop only to go out on the s.cond. It was shorter but still very hard in some sections. Th.re were a couple of uphills, one of which was a loose powdery shale that off.red no groove at all, so therefore very little traction. At one point there were bodi.s allover this particular downhill. Surprisingly there was a larg. finishing percentage. I hear .as high as 70%, also, very few injuries considering the terrain. The injuries were taken care of by Service Search and Rescue assisted most ably by IRRC radio crew. Quite a professional way to run any type of racing, even t. Sampling the view of some of the rid.rs; Carl Price (three points down) said ii was tough but very interesting and fun. Dave Evans said he was a little hot in points but he stil! enjoyed himself along with his daughter D.bbie, who also finished. Attendance as far as Southern California riders was tremendous. The teams present were Mettco Team, Bultaco Team, Iron Horse, P.M.C., Bar Benders, etc. Overall an impressive turnout. In summary I think this again was a well prepared and executep enduro. URA r.putation as race promoters is r.ceiving widespread approval as a club who do.s what they say they are going to do. R.gardl.ss of what oth.r Cycle News contributors say about URA "the proof is in the pudding". P.S. The Li ttle Tuffy was tough! • At least the down"ill was marked.
