Rick Delacy and Dave Faria (128) in the 250 Expert final at Vallejo.
On the gas at Vallejo
By James Brammer
VALLEJO, CAL., SEPT. 21
In spite of the gas shortage in
Northern California with
independent stations shut down,
Dennis Robin~on, unknowingly
was lubing the track with the trick stuff
as he led the Expert Main at Vallejo.
Only the winner, Mike Faria, completed
the 15-lap event without a spill.
Robinson ran out of gas on lap 13
because of a loose gas line. His thirteen
laps places him in a tie with Randy
Booth who completed the race after
falling on top of Ron Sarver. Sarver and
Booth were in close contention for
second behind Robinson when they
scooted. down together. After they
cleared' the track, Kent Johnson went
down in a long slide on the same spot.
Meanwhile two riders had fallen off on
the opposite end of the track. By the
time Robinso.n ran out of gas, the race
was confused with riders returnmg to
the race after falling. In error, the
checkered flag went to Allen Yarrow
first, but the lap' checkers conf'u-med
.that Mike Faria had won with Yarrowofficially in second. Even though Randy
Booth spen t two laps sitting on top of
Ron Sarver in the cen ter of the track, he
returned to complete the race credited
with 13 laps placing him in a tie with
Dennis Robinson by the number of laps
completed.
In the 250 Expert class, Kelly
Mcisaac easily won a heat wi th Marlin
Stewart moving up to second. Stewart,
riding in his second race meeting as an
Expert, got off the li~ in front of Kelly
McIsaac in the main and stayed there to
win while a three-way battle was going
on for third with Wade Boyd tmally
pulling away from Rick Delacy and
Dave Faria for the f'mishing position.
In the 250 Junior final, Brad Kotsaris
led the first laps, bu t winner Craig Van
Dale and Pete Dokini didn't like it that
way so Kotsaris finished third.
Later, Gary\Pietruskiewicz did the
same to Craig Van Dale in the 125
Junior class where Craig Van Dale led
most of the race.
In the 200 Junior-Expert f'mal won
by David Quigley, Rick Delacy had
moved from way back in the field up to
third place behind John Kresha and was
exiting a turn under full throttle when
Kresha's mount locked up. Delacy
clipped him on the outside, tossing
Delacy from his mount in a scaring spill.
After much delay, Delacy walked from
the ambulance on the infield hack to
the pits.

Idaho State Motocross and
Short Track Championships
By Marty Gregory
BOISE, IDAHO, SEPT. 23
It was a big racing weekend at the
Owyhee Motorcycle Club's
Peaceful Cove in Boise. The Idaho
State Championship was at stake
in both motocross and short track and
the stage was set in style. Advertising
was coordinated, the logistics were
taken care of and both the 1/8 mile
track and the motocross course were
whipped into top shape. What
transpired on Saturday and Sunday was
racing and fun at a superlative level!
A fair turn-out of over 75 riders
showed up· on Saturday to contest the
short track event with top honors and
the lion's share of the semi-pro bucks
going to Caldwell's Larry Meredith on'
his trick-framed Honda. (That's a
four-stroke, folks!) Larry's only
competition came in the form of Dave
Howard who brought a whole vanload
of friends and good times with him
from Portland. In the 125 feature, it
was Lawrence Harve:y on a Yammie
scarfing up the gold. Harvey also rode a
stock Yainaha MX in the 125 Beginner
class on Sunday and copped a second
overall. Versatile dude. The exciting
short track had to take a backseat,
however, to the knobby-tired freakos
who dominated Sunday's semi-pro
motocross.
Last year's Idaho State Champion,
Bob Brown of Salt Lake City, and his
ridin' buddy, Bob Plumb, didn't make
the scene in '73 and missed out on a
really fun course. Brown's title and the
Open class were easily dominated by
smooth 01' Vic Greenfield on a Kawie
who won every moto by at least a half
mile and still turned lap times slower
than the highly competitive 125
semi-pros. The 711. cubic inch ·event was
prevailed over by the very latest in
