Keeter and his Harley-Davidson are the current point leaders at Ascot and can't be ruled out for what has been one of the best of the half mile drrt track Nationals of the season. The National will be held at Ascot on Saturday October 6, and . tickets are available at TicketrQn and at Asco t, they. will also be on sale the day of the race. • Tonight's Novice heat race wmoers were Skip Aksland, Nick Nazzisi, Chuck Soderstrom, Randy Miller and Randy Roderick, with all five transferring drrectly to the Main. Only the second and. third place fmisher in each Novice heat transferred to the em; for their last chance to make the Main. The transferee' to the emi were Gary Be""",s, 'awn Leipold, Tom Berry, cott M :hall, Bill Calicura, Wayne Whisena' . Jeff Coleman, Guy Butterfielc., Denny Briggs, and Brad Holt. The first and second place firnsher in e ac h 0 f the three J ullior heats transferred drrecdy to the Main. The fITst heat transfers were J abo Gennai and Randy Bailey. The second hea t transferred ex Barrat and Mike Renslow. The third and final heat transferred Danny Hackie and Sal Peluso. In the Experts heats the first three in each heat would go drrectly to the Main with the fourth through seventh place riders going to the sem;. The riders going directly to the Main were Ron Moore, Tom Harron, and Denny Kanagae from the first heat and DeWayne Keeter, Gene Romero and Ron Powell from the second heat. After the Novcies had trouble getting their act together to start their semi they were pulled off the line and the Junior Semi was brought out to make their final bid for the main event. Only the first three the Jullior semi would make the Main. Roger Crump, all the way OUl here from Georgja, won the semi on his first night's ride on the infamous Ascot oval. Taking the second spot was Bob Sanders with Mike Myers taking third and last transfer position in the semi. The Novkes in the meantime were scrambling around the pits trying to get their act together and were finally brought to the line for their sem;. Only the fltst three riders in the Novice semi would rkl.e the Main and they were all a determined bunch. Jeff Coleman got the first transfer followed by Denny Briggs, Tom Berry and Brad Holt. [n the Experr sem; the fjrst four positions would go to this last half m;le before the big one, the 20-lap Ascot National Mr. IT, Eddie Mulder, won the sem; with CharHe Theilke, Frank Gillespie and Scott Breslford taking the last transfers for the Main. The Trophy Dash was brought out and DeWayne Keeter made it two in a row for tonight's program by winning the trophy dash and the lip lock. Gene Romero got runner-up buck:; for the dash followed by Tom Rockwood, and Ron Moore. Once again the etlttent ovice point leader, Skip Aksland, ran and hid from the rest of the field but the race for the remaining positions was quite a duel. Nick Nazzisi look second place honor" with Randy Miller close behind, then Chuck Soderstrom. The Junior semi was yet another record setting blast of speed and riding skill for probably the hottest Jurnor in the nation. The previous 10-lap record set by Rick Hocking earlier this season was trimmed to 3:48.18, by none other than John Gennai to gjve him his second Ascot track record in the last two week. . e second place finisher in the Junia. m:in was Danny Hackie-with th.e Georgia. :der, Roger Crump picking off the third place spa t. Randy Bailey nailed down the fourth place bucks followed by Rex Barratt who pulled one of the best saves at Ascot this year as he was almost completely off of the bike. Barratt pulled what looked like a Pony Express mount to pull off a spectacular save in the south turn. The last main event of the season before the Big One was led by Ron Moore, who can't be forgotten as a possible for the National, until. mechanical problems sidelined him in the seventh lap. Tom Horton led for laps seven through ten until mechanicals put him out. DeWayne Keeter, riding in third place and closing on the leader then moved up into the lead and can tin Oed on to the checkered flag. Gene Romero took the second spOl followed by Scott Brelsford and Denny Kanagae. Don't forget next Friday, the 5th, is the Golden State IT Championships with the Ascot Nationlal half mile to be held the next rnght, the 6th. • NOISE: The sound that kills the sight.
