Kawasaki has apparen t1y scrapped their 450 trial bike project in favor of a 250. The 250 is lighter at 197 pounds and has a shorter wheelbase. Jim Pomeroy, the pride of American Amaco will be sponsoring two riders to compete in the Trans-AMA series. One will be a European rider, Andrew Baines, an English rider who has been living in West Germany and working for Westlake Engineering. Baines is a former protege of Don Rickman. Andrew finished fourth in Germany last year. The American rider will be Rex Staten from none other than Califomia. Both will be riding big Maicos during the twelve race Trans-AMA series. Amaco is putting tOlJllther a program for the series that will give them a shot at tha Series title. They are about the only accessory manufacturer to put together the time and expense of rtelding a team that doesn't manufacture bikes themselves_ Congratulations to Amaco and Staten, and welcome to Andrew Baines. The 1000cc water cooled V-4 from Harley-Davidson is just a rumor. Commendations to Triumph for advertising that they'd be Number 1 this year, and listing their results with each race. Second' ain't bad, especially in a year which saw your company conglomerated. California Lt. Governor Ed Reinecke will be at Indian Dunes this coming weekend to present trophies. Apparently politics and racing do mix. motocross, 'bought a 1G-speed bike (the kind with pedals) from his father's shop. He promptly got off of it fairly hard while negotiating some railroad tracks. The only thing injured was his pride. Meanwhile, Peter Lamppu has finally been grantlld his U.S. citizenship. Proud t9 have you aboard, Peter. Speaking of thumpers, Kawasaki's "Lobster" 500 class four-stroke single is most lately rumored to be an overhead valve pushrod design. Another source has reiterated the rumor that the Honda CB-750 is going to be converted to shaft drive. It seems certain that their larger-than-750 machine will also be shaft driven. The world's largest motorcycle race, the San Gabriel M.C.'s Barstow to Vegas hare and hound, will be held on November 24th. You may enter by mail only, and you must do so by November 15. The race is classed by the club as easy ?", and they won't allow any cherry picking ("We have lots of fast Novices!"). Pennzoil has posted $9,000 in contingency money for the Tran..AMA motocross series, Motostars Mikkola, Karsmakers and Bauer are flying the banner, and all you have to do to win some of those bucks is to run Pennzoil, h""e a decal on each side of the bike and beat those guys listed above. A win in the international class is worth $300, and support winners get $1 00. Prize money has already risen past the $176,000 mark and may go to $200,000 for the inaugural Mickey Thompson-Delco R-V Spectacular off-road raee the weekend of October 5, 6 and 7 at Riverside International Raceway. That means promoter Mickey Thompson already has the richest race of its kind ever held. Enthusiasts can see all the action on the 7% mile course from grandstand seats for the first time in off-road racing. They can also participate in some of the non-racing activities at Riverside that weekend and take home prizes ranging to $5,000. Yamaha showed their Wankel powered bike at the dealer show in Las Vegas. It is very much like the bike shown at the Tokyo show last year. The enRine is Attention results senders: Please send all results with the following information: Type of event, sanctioning club or organization, location of event, name of raceway, the date, and, if you wish to be paid, your name. If you don't do this it will upset Marion. Marion is a Japanese lady who sets type for us. Marion is a Kung-F u expert. If you don't do as we ask, Marion will visit your next event. Suddenly everything will click into slow motion. The next thing you know, your starter will be laid ou~ with a broken jaw, your scoring stand will be wrecked, and those riders that escape will be loading their bikes and fleeing for their lives. The F"rest Service is thinking about closing the Frazier Park, Calif. area to bikes due to a serious problem with people leaving trash around. To avoid this, biker Tom McQuary is organizing a clean-up drive on October 13, followed by a day of fun October 14. He suggests bringing a box of plastic trash bags, and a pickup if you have it. The Forest Service thinks it's a great idea, and may even furnish a truck to haul away the stuff collected. Call Tom, at 213/335-7250 before 3:30 PM.
