- October 2, 19"73 Page- 25 Myers gets Closer to 9AN (JAB~/E' VAL·LEY M. a By John Bethea • CARLSBAD, CAL., SEPT. 23 There was both disappointment and satisfaction for the two riders chasing single-season ultimate goals for CMG Experts. Randy Myers was the satisfied McDougal was the dejected. Bruce , Randy, in case this is the first time you've heard about it, has a solid bid going for the CMC Championship and No.1 plate for 1974. Today, it became a bit more solid as his closest competitior" Nelson Whitehill, had, a miserable event due to mechanical failures. Myers, however, produceci a Jltunninlt win. That victory came, when Jeff Vidic (Mai) winner of Ute first 250 moto and apparen t1y on his way to a second in the fmal producinlt the overall, suddenly lost fire and pulled to ,a halt right at the fmish line three laps from the end. After repeated attempts to get started failed, he got off his machine and as Randy passed, gave him a double thumbs-up sign. uThat's one you owe me," he smiled later when Randy showed up in the pits to find out what went wrong. During preparation, they had failed to install a gasket on the sidecase and oil from the chain had seeped in and had gotten on the points. "Damn" was all Jeff said later. That could have been the sentiment of McDougal after the 125's in which his bid at No. 36 failed for the fourth 'consecutive' time. He and teammate Chuck Bower had rode a tough race in the first round with Chuck coming out on top. When the final rolled off, Bruce held the lead with Bower tight on his tail. Then in the fourth turn of lap two, he made a slight error and Bower shot by. For the next 10 laps it was nip and tuck, and Bower pulled it out. Huffing and almost weezing, Bower pulled off his Mettco jersey after his ove.rall win and could only comment one thing, ..Sheesh....he is a hard guy to beat." It was Bower's 20th win of the year; last year he won 36. The expected battle between Jim West (Hus) and Rex Staten (Mai) ended rather early in their first round. Jim jumped to the quick lead, but on the second lap Staten, on his 400 to keep the number one machine (the 450) race ready for the circuit back East, took over and ran away to 40 second win. a Just after passing West, however, his rear brake snapped and he rode the remainder of the moto, about nine laps on the International course, without it. West's machine began to sour near the end of the first moto, yet he still had a 50 second advantage over third place Mark Rodman (Yam) when the. checkered flew. Apparently, Jim felt or found the cause unrepairable "t the end because he didn't start the fmal. Mark then jumped· . up to seco,nd behind the then playful Staten and' managed second overall abead of Nels Prario (Mai). Early contender, Mike Yorba (Bul), ran' third in moto one before ignition troubles eventually ended his day of racing. In what may be his final day as an Intermediate, Mike Gillman (Yam) did it again winning both the 250's and 500's via a sweep. He just needs a third place or better Friday night at Irwindale in either the 250 or 500 before he gets _ the bon voyage' to the pros, where he should make quite a stir. • ~.. • Qi~ ~ .. .~ ~ . •• 8:00 A.M.
