Castro _ Bateley moved up to pass Randy Scott, with Mark Williams, Randy Skiver, and Frank Gillespie all moving up into .challenging positions. On lap three it was still Rice with Lawwill and Jim Odom both moving up. Rice and Castro kept up their battle in front with Hateley and Scott and Romero all close behind and trying to pass whenever and wherever they could. Going into lap nine Rice and Castro started lapping some of the slower riders. . On lap eleven Castro went wide on the third turn and Randy Scott shot by on the inside. On lap thirteen Hateley got by Castro, with Mert, Gillespie, Odom. and Romero all moving up to challenge Castro. On lap fourteen Lawwill got up to within a half a bike's length of Castro and with Rice taking the white flag Mert got by Castro. With the checkered flag out, Rice led the field for the win with Randy Scott holding down the second spot ahead of Hateley, Lawwill. Castro. Gillespie. and Jim Odom. Lining up for the Champion's Challenge 'match race were the winners of National Mile and Half-mile races from this year. Jim Rice. Don Castro, Gene Romero. and Mert Lawwill. It was a close race from start to finish for the entire four laps with Jim Rice making it two in a row for the day ahead of Don Castro, Gene Romero, and Mert Lawwill. That's how it was at the First Annual ;l'uborg Beer-Golden Gate Fields mile. Next year look for it to be on the National program. The promoters are the same people who make the Super Bowl of Motocross such an outstanding event each year.
