Page 11 . October 2, 1973 Numberone XDlJS[]R® • • • THE DIFFERENT APPROACH TO MUFFLING I Marland. By Ronald Szilagyi ORANGE, CAL., SEPT. 23 Marland number another Marland Whaley has the 1974 one plate sewn up with first. There is no doubt • IS our best Master in competition. Mark Eggar is going to be right in there. A broken wrist at the start of the year has been troublesome, but his form and second place reveal practice. Bernie Schreiber (fourth) Richard Delaney (fifth), George Smith (third), and Martin Belair are very close in points for the 1974 number two plate. George only rode as a Master four times last year and since the first of the year has been constantly d9ing well, he said "The No. 2 plate will not be decided until the last event, there are only five left; and we will be over here waiting for the results every time." The Plonkers had an excellent trials. Marland Whaley said, "This is the best trials I have attended, the sections were challenging - not easy or extremely difficult. Mike Griffits rode well but dabbed a couple of times too many for he tied for first with Steve Graham but Steve won (five cleans to three cleans) ~e Exp~rt class.•Mike had second and thiS gave hIm enough poillts to transfer to Master. Andre Plouffe was third. There was another tie for fourth between John Wirth (six cleans) and Mike Hansen (three cleans). Don Anderson who won the Amateur class is now a new Expert and if Allen Anderson (seconds) continues he will soon transfer. Watch out for Phil Smith, he was third. The most enjoyable portion of the day was last. I was riding around and came across Mr. Ukai (Honda production engiheer on the trials Honda) who had completed his. fmal loop and was examining the Expert.Master traps and finding them incredible. In one Master only section he shook his head as he ,touched the top of a solid rock face where a deposit of aluminum had thickened from repeated pounding. In Japan he said there are as many as 100 contestants in a trials, the sections are very short and simple. At present the Japanese all ride the same class but next year there will be a Novice and' a Intermediate class, he added out of the 100 riders he finished in the middle. On the way to another Master section I offered to trade motorcycles, he found~ my 325 Bultaco a treat and was deliglned with the torque. His Honda has to be the most comfortable trials machine and it has lots of go. • IN THE PAST YOU HAD TWO CHOICES IN A MUFFLER OR MUFFLER/SPARK ARRESTOR - YOU COULD "RAM IT SHUT"WITH A POTATO-TYPE, OR YOU COULQ "DO-NOTHING" WITH A PIPE-TYPE. NOW YOU HAVE A THIRD CHOICE. ~ mak~ ramme~ POTATO·TYPE - the mufflers that you swear you've .got a potato .~ 1 up your tailpipe; kills power and sometimes kills the engine; works by uSing baffles, louvers or screens that restrict flow, reduce power and dissipate noise. It may be okay for getting by the law or track sound meters, but not for getting by your competition. ~ PIPE·TYPE - the straight through, "do-nothing" mufflers, that don't hurt power or ........... stop noise. (The only way y~u know it's a muffler is because the label says so.) Good for gelling by the POTATO-TYPE on the the track. Also responsible for closing down riding areas; and for giving motorcycles a rotten reputation, With a small enough core and big enough louvers the PIPE-TYPE becomes a POTATO-TYPE. ~ XDUSDR - THE DIFFERENT APPROACH TO MUFFLING. Stops sound beller than the POTATO·TYPE; moves flow like a PIPE-TYPE. Works by "trapping" sound internally while letting exhaust flow through with low restriction (no baffles, louvers or screens). Patented design actually "improves performance" when properly tuned by generating a favorable pressure wave interaction with exhaust system. Available in two models: XOUSOR II muffler/spark arrestor (U.S. Forest Service approved) and XDUSOR-S muffler only. \VI • NEW IMPROVEMENTS ON THE XDUSOR II AND XDUSOR-S MODELS Marland Whaley planking off to collect the 1974 number ~e plate. • ClIO be dl. . . .mbled lor el..nlng and tuning • .Interehengeable reeds tune lor redu~d nol.. and lnereaed perlormllOC8 • Factory guaranteed lor 6 months (with lactory adaptor and center support kit) • XDUSOR Is standard equipment on all new Maleo's SEE YOUR DEALER QR WRITE FACTORY FOR XDUSOR PRODUCT BULLETIN DISTRIBUTORS: WESTERN SCOOTER DIST.
