Jim Turner must have liked it as he picked up the win in the Open Senior class on board his Selby Motors Maico. Turner had tG work around Brian Poulos (CZ) and John Dieu (Yam YZ) who picked· up second and third respectively. Ron Self con tinued his winning streak at Sunnyvale as he walked away with the win in the 250 Senior class. Milan Garrett brought his Husky in for a fme second place finish and Jim Franklin, also on a Husqvarna, finished third. Eric Harvey, mounted on a Bultaco, destroyed all of the 250 Intermediates. Harvey outrode everyone to take the win. Carl Pfister brought his tricked out Maico in for second. Mike Amaral (Suz) again won his race at Sunnyvale, the 125 Senior. Mike Middleton (Suz) had bike troubles and had to take second after leading most of the f'Irst moto. Steve Lawrence had his Suzuki dialed in as he challenged Amaral many times, but Steve is still an Intermediate and took the win in that class. Steve Bargiacchi (Hus) also led the combined class in the second moto. Bargiacchi had his Husky out in front for most of ~e moto but towards the end of the race Amaral got by. Like Lawrence, Bargiacchi is also an Intermediate, and he picked up second in that class. • Fremont Happenings By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., AUG. 22,24 &: 25 Fremont Racewa-y is fast becoming the Ascot of the North with events being run almost five days a week. . The Wednesday nigh t J 0 series short track is in its last stages and cinching th~ win for the free set of leathers from Jim Odom is Kirk Tardiff in the 250 Expert class. He survived the onslaught by the King, Rick Hocking, by placing in every race while'the Hock was out and about the circuit. . Tardiff came up second in tonight's running once again, behind Ted Davidson and his ever fast Bultaco. The win for ''Torco'' put him third in the overall standings and he may be in for a high point trophy. Taking third in the 250 Expert was surprise entry Rocky Malynn. Rocky had been out of action for some time and is now ready for a big comeback and a third on his first try in m onth s is a Rood start. Mark Smith took bis DKW to yet another win and an easy overall win and first 125 class. He has 52 points to date and all on the little scooter. All that and his competition has been rather tough. . Manuel Datan and Billy Graham have been giving the scrambles poin t leader a tough go, but Mark usually squeaks out the win. Th.e mini set is on. the increase and with it some hot racing. The 70 Novices are really great to watch on this full quarter mile and Greg Harvey and Danny Espinosa had to figh t hard to stave off jockey Krusemann who is the leading Novice mini·biker and will be in line to pick up a high point trophy righ t nex t to either Randy Mamola or Ricky Baptista and Ricky Ryan. With the increase as it is, the likelihood of the mini set having their own races is very good. The Friday night scrambles returned after a three week layoff and the troops . were'happy to get back at it, and with a black plate point run going on, it was to be a hot nigh L Once again, the man to beat is Mark· Smith, in the 125 Expert run on the DKW and in the 250, on the Elmer's Sportcycle Yamaha. Smith i1evoured both classes and moved even farther ahead in his quest for the number one plate and probably the National title as well. In the 650 Expert heat,' Duane Spence was well on his way to the win when he lost the front wheel in the fllSt turn· and got run over by Mike Kalamaras, through no fault of Mike's. The iron man' rolled off the track and was taken in for observation and will spend a few days resting. In the Main, Tom Tyrrell took the win over Thorton' Smith, with Scott Pearson hanging on for third. The Moore boys are out and about as were many others getting ready for the Salinas annual affair and Merritt and Russ Moore will be tough to tangle with in the 650 Novice class. One looks at the other, smiles and the race is on. If one gets too far in front of the other, he slows and waits and then back to businesS. All quite smooth and well done. Jim Foley got back into the winner's circle riding a Rick Schell Yamaha to the win in the 500 Expert Main. The former National scrambles champ had been restmg on his laurels of late and
