Page 18 September 18, 1973 found some new energy. The first of the three loops took Mitch about Torty-five minutes. Sixteen year old Bryan Breker(Bul) was running ,two minutes behind, with Larry Pfutzenreuter third. The Novices, who had started fifteen minutes after the big bikes, came through the pits in a cloud of dust and we couldn't see who all the leaders were. Mayes still had the lead on the second loop but Breker had picked up a minute on him. Pfutz was still in the race. By this time the Novice class was all mixed up with some still riding the first loop and some on their second loop. After 2Y.! hours Mayes brought his big Husky in for the win. "Two would have been pleRty", the winner said, "I was starting to get tired". Bryall , Breker came in about two minutes later, and Pfutzenreuter followed five minutes after Breker. Those first three had a big lead over the balance of the pack, the next rider being a very dusty Steve Holladay on a Yamaha. "I was in dust all the third loop. It's hard work passing all those Novices." By this time they were flagging everyone in because it was a Grand Prix finish. Everyone stops after the leader finishes, and it was real hard to tell who had gone three laps and who had gone two or even one lap in some cases. Andy Kirker (Ric) ran one of his best races and picked up first Division 11 Lightweight running eleventh overall with Larry Roesler and his Harley-Davidson 100 taking first in his class. Bruce Ogilvie (H-D) was second in his class. By this time about two hundred riders had pulled into the pits finishing on different laps, bllt as near as we can figure it first Amateur went to john Taylor (CZ) with Mark Wie,rick , (Yam) right behind him taking first 250. Old smoke bomb Gaetz finished about 16th and then passed out from exhaustion. He was okay after an hour rest. First girl' went to cute desert flower Lynn Wilson on her big Husky. The Stump jumpers did a great job. In fact they went over the results and came up with George Meure (Yam) as rlfst Novice. Good show, George... there were 769 riders out there. Stan Wilbert (B\lI) followed George in the 250 Novice class, and Bill Childers (Hus) took first Open Novice. ,Oh, yes.
